Last week, news organizations discovered something truly remarkable: a collection of 100 classified US military and intelligence documents had been uploaded to remote parts of the internet.
On 4chan and subsequently on a Minecraft-oriented Discord channel, resembling a distributed online platform for gaming enthusiasts, the records emerged over a month prior, and quite strangely.
The alleged leaker, who claimed to be a charismatic young gun enthusiast and a “member of the group,” filmed himself shooting a weapon after yelling antisemitic and racial slurs at the tight-knit group of mostly young men. Two individuals who spoke to the group said that the leaker worked on a military base. The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that the group had posted the video on Discord, where they also found more undisclosed documents. Now, more details are beginning to emerge about the origins of these documents.
The recently emerged classified files may appear as daily briefings for the top military leaders, offering insights into the role of the US in defending Ukraine from Russia’s invasion and representing a significant breach of intelligence.
It is challenging to make broad generalizations, as they need to be verified independently due to the inability and manipulation of several signs. It is somewhat surprising that they were the first to be posted on the platform, considering the uncertain origin of the documents.
The repercussions are limited to the attempt to race is the US government. However, an investigation into the leaks has been initiated by the Department of Justice. Various government agencies, including the Department of Defense and Pentagon leaders, are working together to assess any potential impact on national security. They are scrambling to undo the damage and Pentagon leaders are furious. Allies are said to be confused and frustrated, prompting Congress to request briefings.
Worked previously at the Carnegie Endowment, expert Gavin Wilde, says that the documents expose a contradiction between the incredible intelligence-gathering capacity of US agencies and the apparent sloppiness in handling sensitive information by the National Security Agency and the White House, where Wilde previously worked.
“I am really annoyed that it has been bothering me for over a month to gain attention from them. On the other hand, it excels at showing the community intelligence in what it is supposed to do, despite being catastrophically inept in another aspect. It’s a paradox that, on one hand, it appears to charge me for doing something, but on the other hand, it’s what these documents show.”
What the leaks reveal
The most significant aspect is the display of comprehensive intelligence reports and the respective stances of Ukraine and Russia through a range of maps. Speculations from these sources suggest that the number of individuals who could potentially have access to these documents might range from hundreds to even a few thousand. Based on conversations with several former officials, it appears that these documents were possibly captured from a briefing book intended for a senior military leader in the United States and potentially shared with partners.
Glenn Gerstell, who served as the general counsel of the National Security Agency from 2015 to 2020 and now works as an adviser to Global Beacon, a consulting firm, states, “I want to emphasize that the documents reveal methods and sources that potentially appear to want to reveal.”
This could potentially undermine the United States’ capability, for instance, to surveil Russia.
“We have no knowledge. We genuinely do not,” stated John Kirby, spokesperson for the White House, in response to inquiries regarding the containment of the leak or the possibility of additional files being present. Although 100 documents may seem significant, it does not approach the magnitude of the disclosures made by Chelsea Manning or Edward Snowden. These documents are up-to-date, originating from late February or early March of this year, and encompass a diverse array of subjects, extending beyond Ukraine alone. The extensive scope and profound nature of these documents are equally noteworthy.
The Post stated on Wednesday that Bellingcat, a group that had previously flagged this group, likely identified the origin of these documents. They reported that “Thug Shaker Central” shared these classified documents, which the alleged leaker claimed to have reviewed, consisting of approximately 300 photos.
The Israeli government has faced explicit calls, including from Israeli citizens and officials, to protest the new judicial reforms proposed by the Israeli government. According to intelligence signals, Ukraine has not provided lethal aid to Israel, despite calls for such action. The Washington Post cites a document that states Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, advocated for protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as he pushed for a major judicial overhaul in the country. The findings of the revealed documents have surprised other intelligence agencies.
According to a leaked document, President Abdel El-Fattah Sisi of Egypt recently ordered his subordinates to secretly ship 40,000 rockets to Russia for production. This scheme reveals a possible plan to receive military support from Russia, as Egypt, one of the closest allies of the US in the Middle East, has received billions of dollars in military aid. These revelations about Egypt are significant.
Serbia, which has remained impartial in the Ukraine conflict, has reportedly consented to provide arms to Kyiv, as per a document. Further disclosures are emerging, although Serbia refutes these claims.
Circulating the files, Pro-Russia accounts on the social networking site Telegram manipulated some of those casualty figures. According to a report, as of February, Ukraine had experienced 124,500 to 131,000 casualties, with up to 17,500 fatalities, while another document states that the Russians have suffered 189,500 to 223,000 casualties, including up to 43,000 deaths in combat. The leaked documents provide fresh insights into the personnel losses in the Russia-Ukraine war, a topic that both sides of the conflict have attempted to conceal, according to The New York Times.
Evaluating the trajectory of tanks on the battleground might prove beneficial in determining the “Mud-Frozen Ground Timeline” on a monthly basis, as well as revealing the condition of weaponry and precise troop movements between Ukraine and Russia through multiple maps. The Ukrainian counteroffensive is projected to achieve only “limited territorial advancements,” as per a report by Ukraine, which highlights the deficiencies of their military. Additionally, a confidential document provides a comprehensive overview of the situation.
Some of the information on the printed dates given may already be outdated, as US intelligence sources may provide Russia and other adversaries with the ability to reverse-engineer it.
According to Gerstell, “the potential harm to national security is truly significant.” “This is a distinct situation, and it can cause discomfort or embarrassment in our relationships with allies. It is unclear what they truly meant, but the leaks from prior individuals were politically damaging.”
Why did these documents get leaked, and what happens now?
Is the individual who verified the information not still unidentified? An individual from the Washington Post’s reporting team painted a picture of a man. “He wanted to keep us informed, but also showed us a small glimpse of his personal life, sharing documents in the Discord group of members,” according to an unconfirmed source. However, his identity remains unknown and there are still many unanswered questions regarding his sources and motives.
US agencies are likely to show valuable insights and gain favorable propaganda by netting a win in regards to at least two aspects: President Vladimir Putin of Russia is likely to be favorable to itself, regardless of the content of the leaked files.
Earlier this week, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesperson, stated, “I know that there is a tendency to always blame Russia for everything. I cannot comment on this in any way.” It suggests that the files posted on seemingly random forums could be part of a malevolent intelligence operation or influence campaign. Some analysts had previously argued that the origin of this intelligence is Russian, which is why they want to expose it as a valuable source of information.
The Biden administration is now pushing to ensure that the leak is plugged. President Joe Biden said on Thursday that the investigation is “getting close” and he expressed concern about what happened. Although he downplayed the content of the leaks, he emphasized his concern about the incident.
I told Wilde, “It is definitely time to reassess how comfortable they are with sharing and start locking things down. This kind of cycle where everybody kicks off another cautionary cycle will certainly begin. Perhaps, in some cases, the sharing of certain intelligence could be detrimental to the policymaking process in the US. Those concerns may lead to a potential shutdown of certain channels and a significant tightening of access.”
In a declaration, Discord stated that they were collaborating with the inquiry and could not offer any extra information.
“This information is not intended for public consumption and should not be out there. If you don’t mind me saying, it is not the business of yours if it is on television or on the front pages of newspapers. Kirby told reporters from the White House lectern that this is information that does not belong in the public domain.”
However, now it reveals very human aspects of the high-tech wars that the US is engaged in. There is always a potential breach when you have a lot of humans with access to highly classified information, and people make mistakes. Apparently, they love to show off their access to secret information on platforms like Discord, and the US is providing Ukraine with all the advanced weaponry. This is a war between humans, and the US is providing Ukraine with all the advanced weaponry.
The disclosed papers and their alleged sources, the disclosures encompassed within, have been revised twice with additional information on April 10. This narrative was initially released on April 10 and has been updated on April 13 at 11:30 am ET.
