Tiger Woods to miss third straight major after withdrawing name from 2023 British Open field

“According to Mike Woodcock of the R&A, we have been informed that he will not be participating in Hoylake,” said Sports Illustrated.

It is not surprising that Woods will miss The Open Championships, given the state of his body. It may have been his last appearance as a professional golfer at the Old Course in St. Andrews, where he missed the cut last year.

At the 2022 Masters in Augusta, Tiger Woods will have played in only four of the last 12 major tournaments, finishing 47th. He will complete only four rounds in those tournaments, making it his sole appearance in the Open. This will be accomplished by the end of the competition.

Incredibly, one of those victories at Masters 2019 was a remarkable achievement. He has played in the top three spots for over 10 years and has participated in 21 out of a possible 35 majors since 2014. Woods has been plagued by injuries in the latter part of his career.

The 15-time major winner, who emerged victorious at Royal Liverpool in 2006, has recently hinted at the conclusion of his playing profession.

Since I first played here, everything has changed and we come back every year. And of course, the golf course still looks like it’s been here for over a hundred years, but it hasn’t changed. I cherish the memories and I’m able to appreciate the time I have here, just like Tiger Woods said, “I don’t know how many more I will have in the Masters in April.”

Woods stated last summer, “I am unsure whether I will be physically able to compete at this level by the time the Open returns to St. Andrews, in seven or six years.” “I don’t know what my career is going to be like. It’s also one of the reasons why I wanted to play in this championship.”

In April, Tiger Woods underwent ankle surgery, specifically a subtalar fusion on his right foot, in an apparent attempt to alleviate some of the pain he was experiencing as a result of the car crash at the beginning of 2021.

It seems increasingly unlikely that it will happen, but nobody knows when he will play again. In January 2024, Woods is set to launch a virtual golf league called TGL, alongside Rory McIlroy, which will be co-owned. The league will take place indoors, with players hitting screens and cleaning up artificial green. Although Woods has been plagued by injuries in the past few years, he is still able to swing and hit a ball into a screen.

Tiger has remained silent ever since the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia’s PIF reached an agreement, which played a key role in transforming the commercial side of the PGA Tour in the previous year.
