Trial shows Oath Keepers never wanted January 6 to end, and GOP candidates plan to grant their wish

On January 6, 2021, the most harrowing day for Americans, a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, looking to terrorize or even kill politicians in revenge for their unwillingness to steal the presidency for Donald. However, the day ended quickly, which is the saddest part of it all. The Oath Keepers had been planning the insurrection for months, but their hopes for overthrowing democracy and carrying out political assassinations were largely dashed. Eventually, it became clear that the insurrection had failed and Trump, although he promised to lead the mob to victory, never showed up. The targeted politicians managed to escape, and the mob reluctantly went home, with the knowledge that their great plans had come to nothing.

“You haven’t witnessed anything yet,” messaged Stewart Rhodes, the leader of the militia, in a group conversation. However, as exposed in the trial for five Oath Keepers accused of seditious conspiracy on Monday, they were not fully prepared to give up.

“The Keepers of the Oath grumbled in disappointment, as they were unable to find Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, after seeing her head rolling down the front steps. They expressed their frustration that they had not been able to finish the job and promised to return to the Capitol. “We are not quitting,” they declared as they reloaded.”

The witness testified that it was not too late for groups like Keepers of the Oath to call on the government to take action, as Rhodes was still trying to send messages to Trump even days after. After dividing up a huge cache of weapons between three cars, they decided to flee. However, when members began to fear the police finding them while devouring endless baskets of breadsticks at an Italian-American middlebrow cuisine dinner, Rhodes texted in the middle of the dinner to start brainstorming plans to interrupt President Joe Biden’s inauguration with the witness, James Joshua, a Keeper of the Oath. Instead of going back to the Capitol, the Keepers of the Oath convened at a nearby Olive Garden to continue plotting their next steps in finishing the insurrection.

The sad fact is that now, the matter of installing Trump in office on January 6 is more likely to happen a lot more than it is with Biden in office, even though they are both facing stiff prison sentences. These five Oath Keepers are likely to face legal consequences for their role in the violence, as there is evidence against them. The group never attempted to come together to make one big last attempt to prevent Biden from assuming office.

In the 2024 election, Republican candidates have spent months dog-whistling to their GOP base, playing dumb to attract audiences and potentially steal the election from Trump. They incorrectly focused on blaming Biden for inflation, instead of addressing the real threats to democracy. It appears that the insurrectionists, who are poised to take power in an election, may mainly be low-information voters who have little knowledge about the threats to democracy.

“But we are this year,” stated Biden in a address from Capitol Hill on Wednesday evening, “whether the ballot we cast will safeguard democracy or jeopardize it, we are not frequently confronted with the query in a customary year.”

Tim Michels, the Republican candidate for governor in Wisconsin, declared flatly on Monday that he will never lose another election in Wisconsin after being elected in 2024. He intends to do a great job and reward Republicans at the ballot box, which he believes is only meant to be a transparent cover for his campaign. Michels has repeatedly refused to answer questions from reporters about whether he would certify a Democratic win and has been backed by the Big Lie of Trump. Sometimes, Republicans say the quiet parts out loud.

In 2024, should Tudor Dixon, the GOP nominee for Michigan governor, be elected, it is highly probable, if not certain, that she would refuse to validate a Biden victory in her swing state. Doug Mastriano, the GOP nominee for Pennsylvania governor, actively participated in the events of January 6 and was involved in the “fake elector” plot to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election. Kari Lake, the Republican contender for Arizona governor, has only committed to acknowledging the election results if she emerges as the winner. Many Republicans are engaging in the game of speculation regarding their stance on this matter during this election cycle, although it is evident to those paying attention that they have no intention of accepting, let alone certifying, statewide elections where a Democrat is triumphant.

Instead, Trump attempted to manipulate the 2020 election in Arizona by favoring an illegal slate of electors, with the intention of stopping the registration of genuine electors. Lawyer Finchem was deeply involved in this plot. Similar to Mastriano at the January 6th riot, Finchem demanded that some of Trump’s illegal actions be carried out to make it much easier for the party to control how elections are run in the state, thereby securing positions that would give them control over election integrity. It is not a coincidence that Republican candidates running for the role of state secretary, responsible for overseeing election integrity, were present in crucial swing states of Michigan, Nevada, and Arizona, where election denialists are targeting the integrity of the election process. Karamo, Kristina, and Jim Marchant, along with Mark Finchem, were in attendance. Mother Jones reported that the Big Lie was promoted by the insurrectionists during a conference over the weekend.

If they win this election, they can stop much of what can be done. Unfortunately, the people who were organizing the coup have mostly been untouched and may go to prison, but The Keepers of the Oath have been trying again in 2024 with more know-how and power, so they are free to try to win this office again. They failed to scramble the results of the 2020 election and also wasted time trying to come up with strategies to game the system. They are not only running with the goal of a “coup in 2024,” but also have plans to pull off a “fake electors” scam. There are few safeguards in place to keep this motley crew from succeeding if they are in office in 2024.
