US supreme court ‘creeping dangerously towards authoritarianism’, AOC says

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic congresswoman, stated on Sunday that the recent actions of impeaching justices are unlikely to happen again, but it raises a scenario of authoritarianism dangerously creeping towards the conservative Supreme Court.

Joe Biden’s student loan relief program and the rights of LBGTQ+ individuals have been met with far-reaching and controversial rulings. Just days after the nation’s highest court released a series of striking and incendiary comments, her actions on affirmative action have come under scrutiny.

She informed CNN’s State of the Union that these types of rulings are a dangerous signal of centralization and authoritarianism creeping into the court.

In fact, we as members of the court find ourselves beginning to assume the power of the right legislature, with Justice Elena Kagan saying that.

Expanding their power and acting as if they were Congress itself, the court is putting emphasis on the danger and abuse of power.

In the House controlled by the Republican party, a suggestion that would be immediately rejected, Ocasio-Cortez reiterated her previous demands for Congress to consider eliminating them, alluding to ethical controversies that have implicated two of the right-leaning justices, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats and independents who caucus with them maintain a narrow majority.

Alito is accused of not disclosing gifts from a right-wing billionaire who lobbied for Biden’s relief loan program, among other alleged transgressions. Thomas is also alleged to have undeclared gifts, prompting an ethics watchdog to urge his resignation last month.

We must pass much more stringent and binding ethics guidelines, where we see members of the supreme court potentially breaking the law.

To maintain their own credibility, the highest court has not been receiving the sufficient supervision required to address misconduct, excessive power, and misuse. Impeachment should also be considered as an option. We possess a wide range of resources.

“And in the process, they themselves have been destroying the legitimacy of the court, which is profoundly dangerous for our entire democracy.”.

Ocasio-Cortez also called on Biden to expand the court to 13 justices, something the president has said he is unwilling to attempt.

Amy Coney Barrett and Brett Kavanaugh, two of Donald Trump’s Supreme Court appointments, joined the conservative majority of 6-3 along with Neil Gorsuch. Their decisions on the Court have sparked a wave of Democratic outrage, as reflected in her comments.

The conservative majority calling “far-right extremists”, MSNBC’s Phang Katie equally scathing was for Ayanna Pressley, Massachusetts congresswoman and fellow progressive of Ocasio-Cortez.

She expressed that they should cease being politically biased and legislating from a biased standpoint. It is important to learn from the mistakes of the past and work towards overturning the decisions that go against the will of the majority of the people.

The controversial ruling of the panel, written by Alito in its last year, reversed the decision of Roe v. Wade and effectively ended almost half a century of federal abortion protections in the US.

As Biden expressed following a speech at the White House on Friday: “This is not a typical court.”

According to a poll released on Sunday by ABC’s This Week, in January 2022, a notable increase occurred as only 38% shared the same sentiment, compared to 52% of Americans who believed that justices made decisions “primarily influenced by their partisan political perspective rather than by legal principles.”

The survey, however, indicated that a majority, 52%, supported the decision to terminate affirmative action in universities.

The court openly acknowledged Pete Buttigieg, the gay transport secretary, who, as a same-sex couple, was condemned for refusing business to a designer website in Colorado, ruling that it may not have actually occurred.

On Sunday, during his interview with Face the Nation on CBS, he stated, “We are witnessing an increase in such instances, where these situations are intentionally created to provoke strong reactions and gradually erode individual liberties.”

Did we witness the peak of freedoms and rights in this country before they were gradually diminished? The question arises as we examine various decisions, such as the impact on the quality of life for same-sex couples and the recent ruling that restricts a woman’s right to choose. The actions taken by the Supreme Court are worth considering.

Each generation was able to enjoy greater rights, freedoms, equality, and inclusion than the generation before, but not uniformly until now.

Christie, the ex-governor of New Jersey, accused Democrats of being hypocritical by stating that they endorsed the recent decisions made by the supreme court. Additionally, two notable Republican candidates for the presidency also expressed the same sentiment during separate interviews on Sunday.

During the State of the Union address, Christie expressed his belief that the Democratic party had shown support for a supreme court that deviated from the constitution and made decisions beyond its scope, simply because those decisions aligned with their philosophical preferences, over the course of several decades.

The court becomes unusual all of a sudden when they encounter decisions they are not fond of. This is a results-oriented type of judgment. Instead, they should focus on examining the law and considering what they should be looking at.

According to the guidance of their moral compass, each American has the right to exist, to labor, to practice their faith, and in my opinion, matrimony should only be between a male and a female. As a devout follower of the Bible, I, along with former vice-president Mike Pence, commended the decision made by the website while speaking on CBS. He expressed,

“The highest court established a distinct boundary and affirmed its support for religious freedom.”
