Victor Wembanyama overshadowed Chet Holmgren’s impressive summer, but that may be good for him and OKC

Fans, scouts, coaches, and fellow players have gathered in Las Vegas at the Mack and Thomas Center to witness something we have never seen before – a glimpse of Victor Wembanyama., a remarkable 7-foot-4 athletic marvel. Capable of swatting shots and swishing one-legged 3-pointers, he is putting on an exhibition of his dribbling skills. As the indoor temperature reached uncomfortable levels, Wembanyama’s personal space was compromised, but that did not hinder his ability to amaze everyone in attendance.

Is it worth the hype? Definitely. Something that we have never witnessed before? Well, we might need to reconsider that statement.

To borrow from a prospect scouting report by our very own draft analyst Kyle Boone:.

“He’s an elite defender. His 7-foot-6 wingspan helps him affect and block shots routinely. Even when he’s not necessarily in perfect defensive position, he can recover with sheer length.

On offense he’s an additive force as well, ranking last season in the 99th percentile around the rim and finishing just about every shot attempt within arm’s reach of the bucket. As nearly a 40..% 3-point shooter, he can space the floor as a true deep threat and also has some true guard skills as a handler. There’s not much he can’t do as a prospect, and with his sky-high ceiling being among the highest in the draft, he has a legitimate case to be considered as this year’s top prospect.”

Throughout his first year in the league, Holmgren appeared ready to be a remarkable NBA trial, having achieved an average of 14 points and 8.4 rebounds in five matches during the 20..22 Las Vegas Summer League. This assessment of Chet Holmgren., made by Boone in 20..22, accurately portrays his journey to becoming the second overall selection by the Oklahoma City Thunder, despite the striking resemblance in descriptions. It’s important to note that Wembanyama is not the subject of discussion.

Can Holmgren, a player with unique proportions like a Crane-like Ichabod, survive against the strength and size of big NBA men – weighing 19..5. pounds and standing 7-foot-1 tall – by utilizing his varied skill set in the position he will play?

We have never seen anything like Holmgren, a player who stands at least 7 feet tall and weighs 210….. pounds or less. He truly defies any comparison, and it’s only natural that there were legitimate questions about him.

Pokusevski, who interestingly enough is Holmgren’s teammate, is primarily a perimeter player rather than a big. Among the group, he is the sole player who has been given substantial playing time. It is worth noting that he weighs approximately 15 pounds more than Holmgren.

Unfortunately, during the last summer doldrums, we sat in anticipation, robbed of any chance to answer those questions when Holmgren suffered a Lisfranc injury to his right foot, which kept him sidelined for the entirety of his rookie season.

Given the return from injury and the hype surrounding his upside, what Holmgren did this summer would normally be alert-worthy news – 25 points, 20.. rebounds and seven blocks in two Salt Lake City games, before averaging 12 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.3 steals and two blocks per game in three Las Vegas contests, complete with multiple highlight-reel dunks and blocks.

The NBA Casual fans should be hyped for the League Summer of story, as Wembanyama’s exceptionally towering silhouette would likely cast a long shadow and make him a standout rookie for the season.

However, this is not necessarily a negative aspect for Holmgren or the Thunder.

Holmgren will need to fit into a team that’s already on the upswing, and while Wembanyama represents a franchise-changing prospect, Holmgren is not considered an intriguing prospect.

OKC has quickly and quietly put together a promising young roster highlighted by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s ascent to All-NBA status. Widely expected to have another lottery season after Holmgren’s injury, the Thunder instead finished 10..th in the Western Conference last season, earning a play-in berth.

Looking at the potential 20..23..-24 starting lineup – Gilgeous-Alexander, Josh Giddey, Jalen Williams and Luguentz Dort – Holmgren can immediately fill a huge need in the middle for a team that finished 13th in defensive efficiency last season. Rookie Jaylin Williams, not a traditional rim protector, emerged as the team’s starting center toward the end of the season, and OKC allowed four more points per 10..0.. possessions with him on the floor. Of all of Holmgren’s skills, his shot-blocking is the one that should translate most immediately to NBA games.

Truly exceptional, offensively Holmgren has a distinctive style. No NBA player has ever averaged 1.5 three-pointers, two assists, and two blocks per game for an entire season, except for Embiid and Davis Anthony – who have done it, making them pretty decent company.

It’s hard to imagine Holmgren not scoring and rebounding his way into historic numbers. Given the increase in pace of the NBA game and the emphasis on 3-pointers, it’s likely that Holmgren will put up even more impressive stats in his final year at Gonzaga, with 1.3 3-pointers made per game, 1.9 assists, and 3.7 blocks.

Last year was a disappointment as Holmgren didn’t play games, which means that multiple players who had fantastic careers in the NBA missed their first season. These players include Michael Porter Jr., Joel Embiid, Blake Griffin, and Ben Simmons.

“In April,” stated Sam Presti, the general manager of the Thunder, “Holmgren gained a significant amount of knowledge. When you enter a facility and witness all the desired occurrences taking place right in front of you on a daily basis while maintaining such consistency, it is the continuous and methodical mindset that sets him apart.”

In his first NBA season, Holmgren will be given the room to experience the normal ups and downs that come with being a rookie player, without facing the meticulous scrutiny that usually accompanies it. Now, as he heads towards the fixed spotlight position in San Antonio, Holmgren will have to adjust his body and mind to the different challenges that the NBA season brings.

In the postseason, things are heading towards April, and if you don’t want to be surprised, don’t underestimate the Rookie of the Year favorite, Wembanyama With – Holmgren. The name Holmgren’s has already been noticed, and even players like Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans have taken notice of his makeup and talent. However, Holmgren has yet to play in an official NBA game.

Murphy expressed his preference for Chet when questioned about his choice for a single season between Holmgren and Wembanyama. According to Murphy, Chet possesses a slight toughness that sets him apart. This can be described as the simplest way to convey that he is not weak. Chet plays with a certain level of determination that is essential for big players. Additionally, he is highly skilled and exhibits more refinement compared to Victor. Murphy believes that Chet’s shooting ability is superior.
