WATCH: Kevin McCarthy elected House speaker on 4th chaotic day

On a historic Saturday, Kevin McCarthy, a Republican speaker of the House, was elected after midnight on the 15th ballot. This test of the GOP majority’s ability to govern came after a chaotic week filled with boiling tensions on the floor and overcoming holdouts from his own ranks.

Observe the events in the player above.

“My father always advised me, it’s not about how you begin, it’s about how you conclude,” McCarthy told enthusiastically supporting fellow Republicans.

Prepared to confront President Joe Biden and the Democrats, he pledged to issue subpoenas and carry out investigations. “Now, the demanding endeavors begin,” he proclaimed.

Republicans cheered loudly in jubilation when his triumph was declared, chanting “USA! USA!”.

The 2023-24 session is set to commence, and the assembly will officially open its doors to newly-elected legislators who have eagerly awaited the opportunity to take their oaths. After a speaker is elected, the House will finally begin its proceedings.

After four grueling days, more than a dozen conservative holdouts flipped their ballots to become supporters, including the chairman of the Freedom Caucus, leaving just a few shy of seizing the gavel for the new Congress.

McCarthy fell one vote short in the 14th round, but on the cusp of victory, he resumed the session late that night as the House had been in session.

He strode back to the chamber, confronting Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert, who were apparently just avoiding violence and exchanging heated words as they sat as holdouts.

At one point, Republican Mike Rogers of Alabama started to charge toward Gaetz before another Republican, Richard Hudson, physically pulled him back.

“Remain polite!” Someone yelled.

“Once again!” Exclaimed coworkers as McCarthy hurriedly advanced to change his vote to stay in session, but then Republicans swiftly moved to adjourn.

What was finally needed to seize the gavel was a long and grueling standoff on the fourth day, showing the fragility and strengths of American democracy, as a few Republican holdouts began voting after dropping their tally.

Finish this once and for all, McCarthy had declared to reporters earlier in the day that he believed “we’ll have the votes.”.

The stunning turn of events came after McCarthy agreed to many of the demands from his detractors, including the reinstatement of a longstanding House rule that would allow any single member to vote to oust him from office.

Despite facing constant opposition from his critics and the ever-present risk of being removed from his position, he will ultimately emerge as a less influential orator. This is because he has relinquished certain authorities, even if McCarthy manages to obtain the necessary votes.

Since the Civil War era, the history of the U.S. Has not witnessed many rounds of voting, so the speaker’s vote has been dragged through. However, he could also be emboldened as one of the survivors of the brutal fights for the gavel.

Joe Biden attempted to thwart the certification of the 2020 Republican election by Donald Trump’s supporters, resulting in a mob attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, which shook the country. This incident, occurring on the second anniversary of the Capitol attack, has hindered the progress of the new Congress.

The assailants battled against law enforcement personnel and individuals who received accolades from Biden at the White House. During that particular day, Congress was safeguarded by officers who were commended and witnessed a moment of silence from certain lawmakers, predominantly Democrats, during a Capitol gathering on Friday.

“The United States is a country of regulations, not disorder,” he mentioned.

One of McCarthy’s most fervent challengers criticized the GOP leader when several Republicans, exhausted by the spectacle, briefly left during the vote for the afternoon speaker.

In a rare internal party conflict never before witnessed in recent history, the outlines of an agreement with conservative dissenters who have been obstructing McCarthy’s advancement became apparent following three discouraging days and 11 unsuccessful ballots.

And an upbeat McCarthy told reporters as he arrived at the Capitol, “We’re going to make progress. We’re going to shock you.”.

“Republican Scott Perry, chairman of the conservative Freedom Caucus and a former leader of Trump’s endeavors to contest the 2020 election, tweeted that we are currently experiencing a pivotal moment, following his change of vote in favor of McCarthy. This marks a noteworthy shift for Perry.”

On Friday, there was a shift in the votes for McCarthy, with the selection of an alternative candidate for the speaker position. Byron Donalds of Florida, who had been consistently nominated as a Republican holdout, was chosen as the alternative candidate.

The previous day, Donalds mentioned that he had conversed with the ex-president who had been encouraging Republicans to resolve their public disagreement. Trump might have influenced the undecided individuals.

On January 6th, Representative Mike Garcia put forward McCarthy’s nomination for Friday. Additionally, he expressed gratitude towards the U.S. Capitol Police, who received a standing ovation for safeguarding legislators and the seat of democratic governance.

Jim Clyburn, the Democratic leader in nominating, recalled the horror of that day when his colleagues told him, “Today, the eyes of our country are on us.” However, Hakeem Jeffries, the Democratic colleague, said the same.

While attempting to govern, the fresh Republican majority encounters a clear indication of the challenges that lie ahead – the assembly is incapable of administering oaths to its members and commencing the 2023-24 session without a speaker.

The majority control party has the delightful task of electing a speaker, which is usually an easy and joyful process. However, this time, Republicans have faced obstacles as approximately 20 far-right colleagues, who are not considered conservative enough, have hindered their efforts.

The retirement of John Boehner, along with government shutdown standoffs, threatened conservative Republicans. As a result, the new Congress started off disorganized, pointing to difficulties for the Republicans in controlling the House, much like past Republican speakers, including Boehner, who had trouble leading the rebellious right flank.

Changes in legislation passing and drafting would reduce the power of the office speaker, as well as influence more lawmakers to file-and-rank give. McCarthy presented an agreement to the holdouts in the Freedom Caucus, after months of seeking changes to the rules around other centers.
