Allegedly, she was also questioned about the leaked images of her spouse that were shared on social networking sites.
The 41-year-old NBA legend and his daughter were on their way to the Mamba Academy to practice basketball when their private helicopter went down at 1pm.
Kobe’s Sikorsky-76 helicopter crashed in foggy conditions in the Calabasas mountains located to the northwest of Los Angeles.
Vanessa Bryant, the wife he had been married to for two decades, was said to be appalled when California law enforcement officers were accused of purportedly exhibiting disturbing images of the incident, which resulted in the loss of nine lives.
“The allegations that the police shared the photos of the victims’ remains were described by Vanessa’s attorney, Craig Lavoie, as an unimaginable breach of human morality, reverence, and the privacy entitlements of the victims and their families.”
Lavoie called for the harshest possible discipline to be faced by those who shared the photos, in order to bring light to their identities and ensure that the photos are not further disseminated.
Who released the photos?
At least 10 members of the department had spread photos of the crash within 48 hours, according to Vanessa’s lawsuit, claiming that a young Californian police officer allegedly leaked photos of Kobe Bryant’s body to a woman at a local bar.
According to the lawsuit, a deputy reportedly captured approximately 25 to 100 images of the accident site on his mobile phone.
The lawsuit also included allegations that Joey Cruz, a police officer, showed photographs of a crash to a bartender at California Baja Grill and Bar in Norwalk, California.
One of the customers described his alleged actions as “extremely unsettling,” and he allegedly made a derogatory comment regarding the condition of the victims’ remains.
As per the lawsuit, Deputy Rafael Mejia, who was assigned to the crash site, reportedly received 15 to 20 photographs on the day of the accident from another deputy.
He sent the messages to her mobile phone, without any justification other than “unpleasant rumors,” and purportedly approached a female officer who had no part in the inquiry – he subsequently.
Mejia testified that he sent about ten photos to Cruz and expressed regret when he said: “Curiosity got the best of us.”.
Another official, deputy Michael Russell, supposedly shared pictures with a companion with whom he “engages in video games every night.”
Cruz gave testimony in the court, stating that he made a “miscalculation” when he chose to distribute the photographs.
Were the photos deleted?
Sheriff Alex Villanueva acknowledged that he instructed the officers to erase the pictures in order to prevent their further dissemination.
He was accused of concealing the mistake when the Los Angeles Times revealed that the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department attempted to suppress the scandal for a period of five weeks.
He notified NBC4 that he asked the officers to delete the pictures to avoid their distribution to the general public.
Villanueva stated that the individuals had removed them and acquired them, they confessed that they had arrived at the station independently, and the deputies implicated were recognized.
“And, we’re satisfied that those individuals engaged in that.”
“He added that performing the original, customary procedure, which involved relieving everyone of their duties and having everyone seek legal representation, would greatly amplify the chances that those photos would somehow become accessible to the public.”
“And that’s certainly not what we desire.”
Patti Giggans, the head of the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, stated that the elimination of pictures “seems to be an effort to hide inappropriate conduct.”
What lawsuits has Vanessa Bryant filed over the crash?
One month prior, the helicopter accident claimed the lives of her spouse and child, resulting in a lawsuit filed by the wife of the deceased NBA player against Island Express in February 2020, holding the company responsible.
The lawsuit alleges that the pilot, George Ara Zobayan, failed to properly assess the conditions before takeoff and that the weather and foggy conditions in the area on the day of the crash were not safe for flying.
Bryant also has an ongoing lawsuit regarding the disturbing accident location where deputies took and distributed photos in violation of the LA County Sheriff’s Department’s policies.
The widow of the basketball superstar, aged 39, has accused members of the LASD of sharing multiple gruesome and unauthorized pictures of the crash scene.
She has shared images of legal papers that contained the identities of the accused deputies.
TMZ reported on October 16th that Vanessa Bryant might be asked to undergo a psychiatric examination to prove her distress over the leaked photos by Los Angeles County.
TMZ reported that attorneys in the county may want her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation to prove the emotional distress and anguish she claims in her lawsuit, which is related to the leaked photos and the deaths of her loved ones.
According to court documents obtained by USA TODAY, the County’s filings allegedly state that Plaintiffs, despite emphasizing their mental condition in this case, decline to undergo independent medical examinations (IMEs).
Plaintiffs are unable to support their claims and are experiencing ongoing severe emotional distress and anxiety due to the alleged injuries. In order to assess the nature, extent, and existence of Plaintiffs’ emotional injuries, the County brings this motion to compel Plaintiffs to undergo independent medical evaluations (IMEs).
According to TMZ, Vannesa Bryant’s legal team responded to the filing stating that it was nothing more than a “scorched earth” approach.
What was the verdict?
The jury reached a verdict on August 24, 2022, following slightly more than three hours of discussion.
Vanessa Bryant and Christopher Chester, the co-plaintiff who also suffered the loss of his wife and daughter, were determined to have their constitutional rights violated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s and Fire Departments in the plane crash.
Lavoie included in his closing remarks a flow chart that displayed the photos that were sent as evidence. The jury examined the photos, which were not taken with phones, and had questions about the marks over them.
Lavoie expressed, “And when it’s your spouse, your offspring, you don’t have the privilege of frigid proportions.” “However, none of them would be nil. If I inquired all nine of you to provide a proportionate likelihood these pictures would be published on the internet, I would receive nine distinct responses.”
Chester’s lawyer, Jerry Jackson concluded: “Ladies and gentlemen, you cannot compensate enough for the hardships they have endured.”
The law enforcement officers and fire brigade will distribute a combined sum of $31 million in compensation, ultimately granted to both claimants by the federal jury.
Vanessa is set to receive $16 million while Chester will be given the remaining $15 million granted.
