According to reports, on Sunday, September 4, 2022, around 6:30 p.M., A boating incident reportedly occurred at Boca Chita, a place located a few miles south of the U.S. Coast. The incident resulted in the capsizing of a boat carrying 14 passengers, named Lucy Fernandez, a teenager, who is said to have killed ten people and injured others during the Labor Day weekend.
Initial reports suggested that among the eleven people injured in the crash, four passengers were in critical condition. The boat crashed into a marker channel off the coast of Florida, resulting in fatal injuries sustained by Lucy, a 17-year-old senior at Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Miami.
How did Lucy Fernandez die?
On Sunday, September 4th, a 29-feet Robalo vessel collided with a marker channel, causing the boat to be thrown off course and passengers, including Lucy Fernandez and a group of teenagers, to be thrown into the treacherous waters off the coast of Miami.
According to CBS News, the operator of the boat hit a marker channel when he turned around to check on his passengers, causing a big wake.
After the collision, Lucy, together with her classmates Katerina “Katy” Puig and Coco Aguilar, were transported by helicopter to a local hospital on the same Sunday. Out of the four individuals, including Lucy, who were severely injured, seven others sustained minor wounds. The majority of those affected by the incident were students from Our Lady of Lourdes School and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart.
On Monday, September 5, 2022, Lucy was pronounced deceased, creating a commotion in the community.
Tributes flood in for the beloved student
The Facebook post described someone in their community who was beloved and had an affable disposition. The post extolled the virtues of Lucy, a teenager from Our Lady of Lourdes Academy.
“Known for her smile, larger than life personality and signature laugh, Lucy was a joy to all who knew her and a shining light at our school. The hundreds of people who joined us in the grotto this evening, to pray for the repose of her soul, are a testament to her beautiful legacy of faith, love and sisterhood.”
They persisted: the educational institution mentioned that they would appreciate the opportunity to offer their sympathies to her loved ones and acquaintances, who are experiencing grief due to the passing of their pupil.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Lucy’s parents and younger brother, as well as her family and friends, and we share in their grief during this time of great loss. May we continue to pray with each other and for each other, as we mourn the passing of one of our own.”
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio also expressed condolences for the passing of Lucy Fernandez. The Senator, along with his wife, offered prayers for the prompt healing of the severely wounded passengers affected by the accident.
A commemorative ceremony was conducted on Tuesday, September 6, in tribute to Lucy.
