On June 3, Claressa Shields will seek a resounding conclusion to their rivalry. Despite her recovery to secure a thrilling unanimous decision, it remains the sole instance Shields has ever been knocked down as a professional or amateur. In their prior bout, Gabriels dropped Shields to the canvas in the first round with a brutal right uppercut-left hook combination. The native of Flint, Michigan, will have a rematch with Gabriels after initially facing her in 2018. Shields will continue to make history at the home of the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Red Wings as the sole two-division undisputed champion in the four-belt era.
Here is what the press conference attendees had to say on Tuesday regarding Claressa Shields’ upcoming bout.
Quotes from CLARESSA SHIELDS
This was unheard of when I turned pro in women’s boxing…Now, to actually be fighting in front of all these fans and when they won the championship, I watched the Pistons play on TV and my grandmother and I…Watched the Pistons play many games here, I know you’ve come to come for me, born and raised in Flint. This is a true dream come true for me.
I have a problem. I want to solidify what I’ve been saying, that there is no girl in this world who can get a ring with me. I want there to be a fight because of this. Hanna Gabriels is in real trouble when June 3 comes. I’m fighting here in Detroit in front of all my friends and family.
“So, we were aware that Hannah Gabriels was a canine. The individual female who defeated her, she returned and emerged victorious over her. Hanna Gabriels had a record of 18-1, whereas I had a record of 5-0. During that time, I held two championship belts and transitioned into the professional realm, with Hanna Gabriels presenting herself as one of my most formidable obstacles. I always embraced the opportunity to confront the most demanding challenges.”
I immediately wanted the rematch. I said I want to fight her again and I was very frustrated and very upset because the knockdown was a sudden flash that made me angry.
I triumphed and recovered, but it occurred to me previously. I possess the capability to be knocked over. It has occurred to her previously, she possesses the capability to be rendered unconscious. I desire the knockout. I do not desire a unanimous verdict this time, after enduring unanimous knockdowns, I defeated her.
I haven’t ducked anyone. That’s a lie. I don’t know why anyone would say I’ve been ducking. So, I’ve come out on top and Hanna Gabriels fought bigger girls than me, and I have traveled the world.
“I hail from Flint, Michigan. I desire all the conflict. Whoever possesses the confrontation, let’s proceed. Let’s engage in combat.”
Quotes from HANNA GABRIELS
I hope that we will bring war to an end again and it is a privilege to be here in Detroit, where people can enjoy. I am so honored to be here.
I am here to redeem myself, so the cards they gave me on the fight were much better and I don’t think the other girls deserve as much as you gave them, even for your fights afterwards. I didn’t think those cards deserved it because they did better on the cards and fought as much as you did with the other girls, even for your fights afterwards. I didn’t think they deserved the cards because I wasn’t mad about the cards and I wasn’t mad about winning Claressa and I think it was a close fight. I remember that it was a great fight. We were here in 2018.
Two years ago, I fought you for the undisputed championship, and I was still the champion at that time, with 154 wins. I am here to understand why you avoided me and what it takes for you to be at my level.
“She has supported her statements. She has managed stress. It’s not just about the ring, but she has achieved a lot. She is truly the best. She is the representative of women’s boxing and she has achieved a lot. I am extremely proud of Claressa. I am deeply honored.”
Once again, we have the opportunity. I didn’t feel like I had been beaten because I thought it was a powerful word, and she said she will beat my behind again.
“I am deeply honored to bring this fight to Costa Rica and to carry it with me. Today, I am so proud to fight for the heritage of Costa Rica, which was once enslaved. My Great Grandfather, who participated in the construction of the train rails in Costa Rica, was a courageous street fighter. He recently shared some stories with me about his experiences, and we were just discussing them. My father, who also used to box, is part of my heritage and has passed down this fighting spirit to me. Fighting for my heritage is incredibly important to me.”
Quotes from DMITRIY SALITA on Claressa Shields next fight
The boxing legacy of Detroit will continue on June 3 when Claressa Shields makes her defense of the undisputed middleweight and current light heavyweight world champion belts against Gabriels Hanna, the current champion of Costa Rica.
Claressa herself believed, but it was too big of a step, as many of us were told. Please make the fights and the biggest, Dmitriy told me when we started working with Claressa. Hanna was a world champion and a top-10 pound-for-pound fighter. The first fight between Hanna and Claressa happened in 2018.
Claressa Shields, also known as ‘The GWOAT’, grew up in Flint, Michigan, one of the most challenging places in the United States. Every day of her life, she made the choice to stay away from bad influences and focus on her journey to becoming an accomplished Olympic gold medalist. She made the choice to go to the gym, both on the inside and outside, and her dedication paid off.
Quotes from MARK TAFFET, President of Mark Taffet Media and Claressa’s Manager
Today, we are here, and Little Caesars serves me, you must have it. Little Caesars serves me, you must have it. Dmitriy and I have been instructing Claressa Shields, this gives me chills. I am in love with you, boy. Our love will last forever and you can only be the first once… I am here to be a part of the very first fight in the history of Little Caesars Arena.
I always tell people that Claressa Shields, Floyd Mayweather Jr., And Roy Jones Jr. Are the three best fighters I have ever seen in a century, in a decade, in a time when God has not given abilities to everyone.
A lot of people have put in a lot of hard work. It’s a legacy that has been earned for generations and decades. Today, I want to thank all of you who are here showing support for boxing in Detroit and supporting Shields Claressa.
