In the past several months, Republicans in the United States have introduced dozens of anti-LGBTQ+ bills, using specific messaging to justify their bigotry and groom children for sexual abuse, while also attempting to normalize LGBTQ+ positivity in the mainstream.
According to Christina Pushaw, the press secretary for Governor Ron DeSantis’ executive branch in Florida, Bill, who is known as the infamous “Anti-Grooming” on Twitter, stated last month that if you denounce grooming children between the ages of 4 and 8, you are probably a groomer yourself. When recently asked on Fox News’ Laura Ingraham show about what grooming centers for gender identity essentially are, Pushaw labeled them as grooming schools that our public schools have become. Candace Owens, a conservative pundit, tweeted on Tuesday, alleging that the institutions entrusted with our children are actively engaged in grooming, suggesting that we are facing a legitimate pandemic of pedophilia in this “country.”
The idea of pushing aggressively for medical interventions for transgender minors, which Alabama’s SB 184 accuses doctors of, and prohibiting school employees from coercing students to withhold information from their parent or guardian, has been shown in other states’ bills like New Hampshire’s HB 1431 to be thinly veiled.
If one were to consider the complexity of the matter, they may wonder if there are indeed multiple answers to the question. It is quite interesting that this concept is gaining significant attention, especially within the halls of Congress. However, if we were to examine it critically, it may appear absurd. Congratulations on your critical thinking skills!
In 1977, Anita Bryant, a popular Christian-born singer and activist, launched the “Children Our Save” campaign in opposition to Miami’s law barring discrimination in hiring and housing based on sexual orientation. She warned of the absolute horror of men cavorting with other men, hugging little boys wearing makeup and dresses in the San Francisco Pride Parade. She used her celebrity status to “recruit” children and teach them about homosexuality, much to the dismay of her pastor and horrified Christian community. At least as far back as 1977, conservatives in the United States have tried to link queer individuals to child sexual abuse.
In 2016, extremist posters on imageboards like 4chan and 8chan fabricated a conspiracy theory in which Podesta’s emails contained encoded messages unveiling a DNC-funded pedophilia and sex trafficking network, Rich was killed to conceal the Democrats’ various wrongdoings, and harmless pizza parlors concealed secret chambers where children were sexually assaulted. Following the hacking of Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman John Podesta’s email and the murder of Democratic National Committee employee Seth Rich in 2016, belief in the false narrative greatly increased with the Pizzagate hoax. This unfounded belief that LGBTQ+ individuals are sexual predators has persisted as a deeply ingrained conservative conviction (including internationally, as exemplified by the Russian vigilante group Occupy Pedophilia) throughout the years. The theory strongly intertwined with the imageboards’ internal jokes, particularly the coded phrase “cheese pizza,” which, through its initials “CP,” also represents “child porn” — a terminology necessitated by the posting and hosting of abusive content involving children by users and operators of these same platforms.
