Why do Teslas cost so much to insure?

If you are the owner of a Tesla, you are probably aware that insuring it can be extremely expensive. It is worth noting that a Model Y is classified in Group 50, which is the highest possible classification. To provide some context, a Hyundai IONIQ 5 Ultimate with the same performance as a Model Y is classified in Group 39, while a Porsche 911 is classified in Group 46.

What is the reason for the high Y? There are five major factors:

1. Security:

You incur a higher cost, resulting in an increase in the categorization. Thatcham, the organization responsible for determining insurance groups in the UK, expresses unease regarding Tesla’s security systems and exhibits apprehension towards the smartphone and card key scenario, as they perceive it to make the car more susceptible to theft.

2: Speed:

This is a risky situation for drivers who are inexperienced and new, as even a standard Model 3 can accelerate faster than a Ferrari from the 1990s. In the first two weeks of owning a Tesla, we have witnessed a lot of accidents, as one broker informed us. Some drivers may suspect that this is because they are not accustomed to the instant acceleration and find it difficult to get their new car moving smoothly.

Insurers do not prefer the key that is based on the app.

3: Poor design:

Cars have bumpers, so they can shrug off odd parking knocks without worrying too much. However, if you look at the back of a Model Y Tesla, you’ll see that the plastic bumper is further out than the metal tailgate, which means even the tiniest knocks can deform the panel. This makes the bumper more complicated and expensive to repair than the bumper on any other car.

4: Parts supply:

Owners often report having to wait for months to repair certain components needed to complete a repair, especially after even the slightest collision, due to the scarcity of some parts for Tesla.

Insurance companies despise the fact that your premium will be more expensive due to the accumulating hire car fees, resulting in a significantly higher cost for the claim, amounting to thousands upon thousands. In addition to the inconvenience, you can anticipate receiving a comfortable courtesy car while you wait.

5: Trip hazard:

In the event that it occurs, the underwriters will increase the premium. However, we have not received any reports of such incidents so far. If a badly positioned cable hangs across a pavement or walkway and causes someone to trip, they may file a claim against the car owner’s insurance for the resulting injury. One of the risks that are applicable to all electric cars is that insurance companies must consider the overall situation and evaluate any potential risks.
