Why More House Republicans Are Flirting With Impeaching Biden

On Thursday, McCarthy informed journalists, “The pinnacle of Congressional authority is achieved through an impeachment inquiry when a vote is taken on the floor.” The Republican from California stopped short of advocating for the impeachment of Biden, but he heightened the possibility by suggesting an impeachment inquiry into the President based on unsubstantiated allegations of financial wrongdoing.

At the same time, Republicans aim to subject Biden to a trial in the corridors of Congress, where former President Donald Trump will protect himself against various criminal prosecutions in courtrooms across the nation. The upcoming election will be contested outside the usual locations of the campaign trail, indicating that the proceedings, serving as a preliminary measure prior to introducing articles of impeachment, may extend throughout the 2024 campaign period at a pace determined by the House GOP. Nevertheless, the endeavor is bound to make no progress in the Senate, which is controlled by the Democrats.

According to Jim Manley, a previous assistant to the deceased Democratic Senators Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy, “The main focus is on safeguarding Trump and creating confusion and ambiguity between Trump and Biden.” Democrats and certain Republicans argue that an impeachment trial in the House is suitable for this purpose. Democrats and some Republicans privately claim that Trump and his followers desire a resolution to the ongoing legal issues he will confront during the ongoing election. This is the objective.

The TIME magazine reports that a knowledgeable senior Republican House staff member stated, “The evidence and related information that has been revealed is the reason for his change in stance.” GOP legislators claim that Devon Archer, a close friend of Hunter Biden, will support the allegations that Biden, while serving as vice president, was involved in his son’s business transactions during a confidential testimony scheduled for Monday. Additionally, it is stated that a Democratic donor who purchased an expensive artwork from Hunter Biden received a favorable appointment from the President. Moreover, two IRS informants assert that the Department of Justice provided Hunter Biden with a favorable agreement, which subsequently fell apart when presented before a federal judge. Republicans argue that McCarthy’s shift towards impeachment was prompted by this recent series of discoveries.

Since January of last year, the House Republicans have conducted myriad probes into the presidency and family of Biden, creating a groundswell among the MAGA base that hunger for retribution, seeing Trump as the only frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. The allegations and investigations have only grown, as Trump wants to see Biden impeached, and his indictment has soared in the polls following each clear indictment.

In a conversation with Fox Business on Thursday, GOP House Conference Chair Elise Stefanik expressed her absolute support for impeachment, stating that she believes it is absolutely warranted. Rep. Cory Mills of Florida, one of President Biden’s fiercest allies in Congress, also echoed this sentiment, stating that the President is the most corrupt in our nation’s history.

In the state, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election. The other investigation is conducted by a separate special counsel named Smith, focusing on Trump’s involvement leading up to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6. It also seems likely that more prosecutions will follow. Special Counsel Jack Smith has added new charges against Trump in the Mar-a-Lago documents case, accusing him of deleting video evidence to hinder the investigation. Simultaneously, he is under federal indictment for allegedly hoarding national-security secrets and obstructing the government’s efforts to recover them. Trump is also facing criminal charges in New York for allegedly falsifying business records in order to hide payments made to a porn star. These legal troubles are occurring while Trump faces numerous challenges.

It is premature to open an impeachment inquiry when they gather material that indicates there is an impeachable offense. We have ongoing investigations because of these, so I don’t think it’s responsible to talk about impeachment. Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Colorado, tells TIME that McCarthy doesn’t have buy-in from his entire conference, which is one problem McCarthy faces on the Hill.

The endeavor may falter with just a few defections, as Republicans hold a narrow 222-212 majority in the House. Additionally, Buck is not alone. Concerns have been raised by certain GOP Hill staffers and members about the potential backlash of impeachment proceedings against Biden taking place secretly.

He says, “This has been done to distract from the lack of consensus on bills appropriations.” Lawmakers will need to pass such bills to keep the government funded or risk a government shutdown on October 1, when they return in September. Congress left for its August recess without passing crucial appropriations measures to fund the Department of Food and Drug Administration. Buck thinks McCarthy’s flirtation with impeachment is due to Biden’s misadventures and the party’s grip over Trump.

“Manley predicts that the backlash from Trump, his supporters, and the rest of the caucus will be severe. However, even if certain Republican lawmakers are hesitant to impeach Biden, a few seasoned Capitol Hill insiders speculate that the anger of Trump and his supporters might sway their opinions in the upcoming months.”

The first attempt to censure Rep. Paulina Anna Luna, a Republican, was not successful. However, another measure was later voted against by Republicans on January 6th, which led to a social media backlash and mobilization by Trump and Luna. Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, who led the impeachment committee against Trump, played a similar dynamic when he forced a vote to censure Luna last month after the failed attempt.

After that, his Senate campaign garnered $8.1 million. The experience brought him some positive aspects, whereas Schiff became the 25th House member to encounter such a rebuke and will now be subject to a House Ethics inquiry.

The reason why Democrats believe impeaching President Biden could help the GOP in the campaign for reelection is because it would create a “spectacle.” A senior Democratic staffer on the Hill tells TIME, “Impeachment hearings would make for good television.” They already know that voters are tired of hyper partisanship, adds the official. Republicans are here to perform political theater. Democrats, on the other hand, are here to emphasize the contrast between the parties and lower costs. Moreover, Democrats would use the proceedings to further emphasize this contrast, adds the official.

A Biden impeachment inquiry would either be a blunder during the election season or a political victory. The caucus is currently facing the dilemma of how to go beyond just sending messages, resulting in them having limited authority to oppose Biden’s decisions while being hindered by the Republicans’ very narrow majority in the House.

The Hill employee states, “If you provide them with sufficient leeway, they will ultimately bring about their own downfall.” “This is contributing to the political spectacle that assisted in their defeat four years ago and resulted in their subpar performance two years ago,” Democrats are wagering that it will be the latter.
