The North Entrance of Yellowstone, situated at Gardiner, is the second most popular entry point to the park, open year-round and featuring only five access points.
If you attempt to reserve lodging in April or even March for July or August, you will be very tardy. A wait time of under an hour at a restaurant is considered fortunate, and there is heavy traffic in Gardiner during a typical summer.
Despite the damage, the road to the north entrance of Yellowstone remains temporarily closed for repairs. The community came together with remarkable fortitude to reopen it, which is quite miraculous. The scene in Gardiner looks different in the post-flood summer compared to the usual summer.

I’m here to tell you that there has never been a better time to visit Yellowstone North and Gardiner. The opportunity to stay in unique campsites and accommodations, typically out in well-advanced books, offers a chance to experience the charm of a small town, endless outdoor recreation, abundant wildlife, and no crowds. But this presents an opportunity for visitors like no other in the park.
During this summer, there are several distinct activities to engage in Gardiner MT, along with a glimpse of what a visit to the northern entrance of Yellowstone National Park entails this year.
Disclaimer
Prior to confirming arrangements, we strongly advise consulting the official website for flood recovery in Yellowstone National Park. Although we strive to maintain the accuracy of this guide, the park consistently updates its information. The schedule for reopening the North Entrance and Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone is constantly evolving.
If you attempt to drive your car through this entrance, rangers at Yellowstone’s North Entrance in Gardiner, Montana, will direct you to turn around. Please note that there will be no traffic allowed in the park in early August 2022.
Visitors, however, may enter the park on foot or by bicycle and have a plethora of options to explore Gardiner, including unique places, shops, restaurants, and numerous activities. Additionally, there are also approved tours, outfitters, and guides available for those who prefer guided experiences. Later!
If you have an open and patient mindset, you may consider exploring some less-visited areas of Yellowstone as a rare opportunity. This is especially true if you have planned a biking or hiking route, as the main road in the park near the north entrance still remains washed out in several places.

Yellowstone North Entrance Activities
You can’t drive yourself to the north entrance because there are tons of adventurous and fun things to do in MT Gardiner!

Roosevelt Arch
Travel to the famous stone arch (please remember that driving into the park is not allowed!) And take a moment to capture mandatory self-portraits.
Yellowstone white water rafting
You can see the North Entrance of Yellowstone and the Roosevelt Arch just outside the park, as well as many outfitters’ buildings. In fact, you can even raft on the Yellowstone River.
There are several excellent outfitters situated right along the river, so you can literally hop into a raft and embark on an incredible 8-hour white water rafting trip from downtown Gardiner. It comes highly recommended, especially the Adventures of Flying Pig.
This section of the river is especially calm, making it one of the best things to do for families in MT Gardiner. The trip takes approximately 2.5-2 hours.
Yellowstone Fly Fishing
The River Yellowstone, which runs alongside the smaller Gardner River (not to be confused with Gardiner!), Offers some of the best fly fishing in Montana within the boundaries of the park.
