ProCane Draftees:
Homer Travis and Adrian Colbert, former Canes, have joined Chicago’s roster. They were selected by the Bears in the second round of the overall 56th round. It is true that the former five-star Stevenson was expected to be the first Cane drafted in the 2023 NFL draft, after an impressive pre-draft process that included a phenomenal Senior Bowl. With his natural athleticism and versatility across the secondary, Stevenson should be able to quickly compete for reps. He could actually become an early starter.
Mallory, a rookie quarterback from the Miami area, will have the opportunity to work with Anthony Richardson, a rival quarterback. In addition, Mallory should also get early reps in a crowded but young group of tight ends consisting of Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, and Mo-Alie Cox. Mallory is predominantly known for his blocking prowess and could work on his skills as an inline tight end. At the Combine, Mallory had the fastest 40-yard dash time among talented tight ends in his class, and he had a strong pre-draft process at the Senior Bowl. Similar to Stevenson, Mallory was selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the 5th round (162nd overall pick).
During his career in Miami, DJ Ivey recorded 6 interceptions and 127 tackles. He has an athletic and long frame, which may enable him to stick on an NFL roster, according to Ivey. In the past season, he had a down-and-up career with the Miami Canes, including susceptibility to broken plays in the secondary. Ivey, a native of South Dade (Miami) and a graduate of Miami’s Pro Day, impressed at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl showcase with a 39-inch vertical jump and a 4.46-second 40-yard dash. As the final hour of the draft came, Ivey, whose name was called by the Cincinnati Bengals, was a surprise for Miami fans during draft weekend. (Overall 246th round)
Undrafted ProCane Signings:
Hedley, a player who unquestionably merits an opportunity in the NFL, is P Lou Hedley. Trailing behind Steelers punter Pressley Harvin III, Hedley was the second-place finisher for the Ray Guy award in 2020. Despite Blake Gillilkin’s dependability, he has a record of injuries, and Hedley will vie with him.
Braxton Berrios and Jaelan Phillips, ex-colleagues, will accompany Scaife, a Miami Southridge local, who initiated 51 games throughout his five-year tenure with the Miami Dolphins. Scaife, another consistent figure in Miami, will pursue his professional journey in his hometown with the Fins, who would benefit from additional depth in their offensive line.
LB Mitchell Agude of the Miami Dolphins will aim to establish a position on the roster. Agude, who transferred from UCLA to Miami, is following in Phillips’ footsteps. He exhibited his presence in the backfield by recording 4.0 sacks and 21.5 tackles for loss during his three-year career in his final season.
Throughout his three-year tenure, linebacker Caleb Johnson, who played for the New York Jets, amassed a total of 137 tackles as a reliable tackler. Currently, after spending two seasons at UCLA, he moves to Miami and aims to secure a chance in the AFC East, much like Agude.
Additional Canes who meet the requirements for the draft, like Antonio Moultrie, Waynmon Steed, Devon Perry, Lucious Stanley, and Justice Oluwaseun, have not been chosen at this time.
Dan Morgan, a former Carolina Panthers assistant general manager and a legendary figure for the team, will serve as a mentor for Johnson off the field. On the field, Brian Burns, a talented player, will provide guidance and mentorship to him. Johnson possesses inherent athletic ability that allows him to excel in the NFL, as evidenced by his impressive 6.0 sacks during his breakthrough sixth season. After spending a year primarily as a special teams player for the Canes, Johnson made the decision to transfer to Mario Cristobal’s program at Oregon. The Carolina Panthers selected Johnson with the 80th overall pick (3rd Round).
Phillip Dorsett and former comrade Jaquan Johnson will accompany him. Three passes guarded and a compelled fumble. A postgraduate season at Arizona State where he amassed 56 tackles. 8.0 tackles for deprivation in 2020, encompassing 106 tackles that he documented at Miami. One of the country’s finest protective tackles in the 2018 recruiting class, Silvera had a satisfactory career at Miami. Another Miami citizen (American Heritage), Silvera was extensively esteemed. 231st Overall (7th Round), Nesta Jade Silvera Las Vegas Raiders, DT.
Perry has accumulated 5,483 passing yards and thrown 45 touchdowns (with 12 interceptions) during his two-year tenure with the Owls. Additionally, he has scored 10 rushing touchdowns. Within the Conference-USA, Perry has been making a noteworthy impression at FAU. Notably, Perry showcased an impressive performance during the 2020 Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma State, where he nearly led the Canes to a comeback while filling in for D’Eriq King. As a result, Perry has received an invitation to the QB N’Kosi Perry Chicago Bears Mini-Camp.
