Love Is Blind Is Suddenly Mired in All the Wrong Kinds of Drama

The reunion of the hit reality TV show “Love is Blind” on Netflix definitely stirred up even more drama after fans had to wait for over an hour. It’s messy and chaotic, but the fourth season just ended, proving that love may or may not be blind.

The show The Blind Love is a social experiment where singles from different cities go on dates and get engaged without ever seeing each other. The ultimate question of the show is whether the couples decide to get married or not, after several episodes of getting to know each other. The series has been widely successful for Netflix, expanding to other countries like Japan and Brazil with spin-offs. Casting for additional seasons has started in Washington D.C., Denver, Minneapolis, and Seattle, after the fourth season aired.

The latest season, which started on April 16th and ended on March 24th, has seen explosive breakups and endorsements from celebrities like Kim Kardashian. Multiple married couples from past seasons have also come to an end. These couples include Zack and Bliss Poureetezadi Goytowski, Kwame and Chelsea Appiah Griffin, and Brett and Tiffany Brown Pennywell.

Taking a new direction for the dating show, the aftermath of season 4 has brought about significant changes. The unsuccessful live reunion has received a lot of criticism, which is unjust. Viewers are also accusing Love Is Blind’s co-hosts of insensitivity due to specific remarks made. Former contestants are raising concerns about ethics and the impact on their mental well-being.

Previously, being renowned on reality TV ensured a prosperous profession as an Instagram influencer. Nonetheless, that is no longer a reality.

An embarrassing not-so-live reunion

Instead of the usual pre-taping and releasing of episodes, Netflix has decided to take a further step by hosting a special reunion as a live event for the 4th season of Love Is Blind. In the past, Netflix has experimented with releasing episodes in weekly batches rather than all at once, but they are known for being a content-worthy binge for a large part of their audience.

According to Netflix executives, the show was eagerly anticipated by over 6 million viewers who had been waiting for an hour on their screens before it finally appeared, as promised, at 8pm ET.

While fans were eagerly waiting, there was quite an active reaction on social media, with some even referencing the origins of the streaming company as a DVD mail-by service, saying “Y’all better go back to shipping DVDs out.” Even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez got in on the action, tweeting, “Someone call the seamstress to fix this!” Netflix’s fumble also got attention, with fans sharing memes and reacting to another’s.

As per our original plan, the Love is Blind Live Reunion did not go as expected… We apologize for being extremely early, giving up their Sunday afternoon, waking up late, and staying up for everyone who wrote a statement on Twitter, Netflix released the episode on Monday midday. The new season of “Blind Is Love” will premiere on May 24, 2020, with Vanessa and Nick Lachey returning as the hosts, just like they did in the first season. The delay was not the only thing that upset fans.

“If that doesn’t ignite your desire to have children,” she remarked, in reaction to a segment displaying former contestant Bartise Bowden cradling his newborn. She made remarks like, “I hope all of you are actively attempting to conceive,” and posed inquiries such as, “Who will be the first couple from Love Is Blind to have a baby?” And “What are your thoughts on the timeline for starting a family?” Audiences are criticizing the behavior of the Lachey couple during the season 4 reunion, specifically pointing out Vanessa’s persistent barrage of questions regarding the future parenthood plans of the married participants.

“Wow, you all really applied the pressure about having a baby,” Brown remarked in response to the questioning during the reunion. Social media users criticized Vanessa’s insensitivity in assuming that the couples desire or are capable of having children.

Paul Peden, the contestant on Micah Lussier’s show, seemed displeased with any explanation he offered. He couldn’t understand why Vanessa, his partner, was envisioning her as a “mother” or “nurturing.” In fact, he asked the contestant several times, doubling down on his disbelief.

Vanessa later expressed her apology to Peden, as evidenced by an Instagram Story in which she showcased the flowers she had sent him. However, it is not appropriate for her to portray herself as an impartial and unbiased individual if that is indeed the case. While she is entitled to delve into her personal inclinations, Peden informed People after the reunion taping, “I noticed a slight hint of personal bias during the interaction.”

Many fans are calling for hosts to be replaced in order to create a better pair. One person has gone so far as to create a petition, which has gathered over 20,000 signatures.

Broader concerns about ethics and mental health

The producers of Season 2 say that contestant Danielle Ruhl experienced a traumatic filming experience, taking advantage of her panic attacks, lack of sunlight, insufficient meals, and high levels of exhaustion. Despite her suicidal thoughts, she was pressured to stay on the show.

The creators of the show told Chris Coelen that “each person’s journey is accurately portrayed,” according to a report published by Business Insider a few days after the show’s producers, who are based in New York, mentioned that the production involves background checks, psychological evaluations, and social experiments to determine matchmaking compatibility.

We have rigorous protocols in place to ensure the wellbeing of each person filming before, during, and after. In response to the allegations raised by past contestants, Content Kinetic, which produces the Netflix series, told Variety in a statement that the paramount importance is the participants’ welfare.
