Anheuser-Busch sales plummet in US amid Bud Light boycott

Following a product recommendation from a transgender influencer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, the biggest beer producer globally, experienced a significant decrease in income and earnings in the United States during the three-month period ending in June. This illustrates the substantial financial impact caused by a consumer protest against Bud Light.

Meanwhile, the latest data revealed that Anheuser-Busch experienced a decline of over 28% in its primary earnings within the United States. As stated in the company’s earnings report, which was published on Thursday, their sales in the U.S. Dropped by over 10% during the three-month period in comparison to the corresponding period in the previous year.

The decline in U.S. Performance resulted mainly from the decrease in Bud Light sales volume, as stated in the earnings report.

Approximately 380 employees, which represents less than 2% of its workforce, Anheuser-Busch revealed intentions to terminate their employment one week following the arrival of the report.

The progressive side was disappointed, leading to annoyance from certain LGBTQ supporters, following the company’s initial reaction being seen as appeasing by some conservatives. This resulted in a decline in sales and a growing support for a consumer boycott of Bud Light in April, organized by transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney.

Gerald Davis, a professor of organizational behavior at the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business, explained to ABC News that consumer boycotts are often easy to initiate but seldom gain significant attention from the public. He emphasized that most consumer boycotts have a minimal effect on a company’s sales or profits. However, he noted that the Bud Light fiasco will be seen as a significant event, given its substantial impact on profits.

Indicated by the data, the week concluding on May 20 witnessed a decline of approximately 26% in sales. As per the data provided by Bump Williams Consulting and Nielsen NIQ, which was assessed by ABC News, there was a continuous decrease in the sales of Bud Light throughout the United States for a minimum of six weeks subsequent to the commencement of the boycott.

Then, in July, Modelo surpassed Bud Light as the best-selling beer in the United States.

In response to declining sales, Anheuser-Busch InBev CEO Michel Doukeris said that the company has provided financial support to tens of thousands of independent distributors and frontline workers.

Following the initial boycott, Anheuser-Busch InBev published a statement from CEO Brendan Whitworth on its website in April.

Whitworth stated, in part, “Gathering individuals over a beverage is the industry we are involved in. The intention was never to create division among people through discussions.”

In April, the Wall Street Journal stated that the company also suspended two executives, who supervised the approval of Mulvaney’s Instagram post.

Today, The Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s largest LGBTQ advocacy organization, announced the suspension of Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Corporate Equality Index score, as reported by USA Today. The company had previously achieved a top rating of 100. The response received sharp criticism from certain LGBTQ supporters, who viewed it as a surrender to the backlash and boycott.

Displayed in the financial results, the quantity of products sold decreased by 1.4% during the specified time frame, as the rise in prices contributed to the significant increase in revenue. In comparison to the corresponding period from the previous year, Anheuser-Busch accomplished a global revenue expansion of over 7% during the three-month period concluding in June, even though the decline in sales within the United States was disclosed on Thursday.

During the morning trading session on Thursday, the stock of Anheuser-Busch increased by 1% following the announcement.
