Dr. Henry Hulme, Anne Perry’s father, was a physicist and Juliet’s diagnosed tuberculosis with child. Due to the decision made by the family, they decided to send their daughter to South Africa, where the climate is warmer.
When her father was appointed Rector of Canterbury University College, Juliet joined her parents in New Zealand. She was 13 years old.
Despite her mother’s refusal, Pauline also desired to relocate to South Africa alongside her friend Juliette. The two girls were incredibly close, with Juliet having a best friend named Pauline Parker. The pivotal moment in her life occurred when she reached the age of 15.
Anne Perry’s early life was marked by tragedy. She was just 15 years old when she and her best friend, Pauline Parker, were convicted in 1954 for the murder of Pauline’s mother, Honora Rieper. Both Parker and Perry were sentenced to five years in prison, but they were released after serving just under four years.
After her release from prison, Anne Perry changed her name to Perry Anne, and moved to the UK where she began a new life. In the 1960s, she worked as a flight attendant and receptionist before moving to the United States and working as a secretary for film director Peter Bogdanovich. She also studied at the University of Edinburgh.
In an interview, Anne Perry once stated:
I had to give up my past – the hardest thing imaginable – and begin life in my new identity as Anne Perry, knowing even a tiny slip could unravel everything,” she says. She became a Mormon and moved to a small, secluded community in Scotland.
