Earlier this month, Bud Light, the best-selling beer, received backlash on social media from conservatives after an influencer promoted it on social media.
And even as research has shown that other social media-fueled boycotts were short-lived, two Anheuser-Busch executives are on leave amid the firestorm.
Mulvaney Dylan, a transgender influencer, has more than 2 million followers on Instagram and over 10 million followers on TikTok. The brand’s beer promotion, named Madness March, began on April 1st and went through a challenging period.
An image of her face was displayed on the side, to honor the anniversary of her transformation, a uniquely crafted tallboy can was sent to Mulvaney by the company. Engaging in a conversation about March Madness, Mulvaney savored a can of Bud Light while filming a video for her Instagram.
Recent years have seen politically contentious issues involving trans people, such as access to gender-affirming medical care and participation in youth sports.
Kid Rock, in his own video, took aim at several instances of Bud Light, while sporting a MAGA hat, which ignited the disapproval of conservatives on social media. These individuals called for a boycott due to Bud Light’s association with Mulvaney. This occurred three days following Mulvaney’s post.
In the immediate future, it seems that the company’s financial performance indicates that the protests have impacted the sales figures in the previous week.
According to an analysis of Nielsen data published in The Wall Street Journal by Williams Bump Consulting, sales of Light Bud declined by only 1.6% year-over-year when comparing the week ending April 1, 2022, to the same week in 2021. The video posted by Mulvaney on April 1 showed that Light Bud sales fell by 17% in the week ending April 15, compared to the same week in 2022.
According to Axios, in the late March category, Light Bud had outperformed other light lagers with sales of about 3,000 nationwide, according to BeerBoard, a company that tracks beer sales in restaurants from April 15 to April 2.
The company has not publicly said whether or not they will return when paid leave is over for Anheuser-Busch brands. Alissa Heinerscheid, the vice president of marketing for Bud Light, and Daniel Blake, a marketing executive who oversees several brands at Anheuser-Busch, confirmed that two marketing executives are on a leave of absence.
Boycotts driven by social media often last only a few weeks, researchers say
Nevertheless, studies suggest that social media-led boycotts have a tendency to be short-lived, as stated by Jura Liaukonyte, an economics professor at Cornell University.
When liberals targeted the company, Goya, President Donald Trump then praised the CEO of the company. The team of colleagues examined the boycotts of the food company, and Liaukonyte. After signing a controversial contract with Joe Rogan, the podcaster, Spotify faced account cancellations and calls for its cancellation.
Liaukonyte stated, “What we discovered is that the patterns were remarkably alike.” “Within a span of two to three weeks, they adhered to a single news cycle, ranging from no activity to a peak and then returning to zero once more.”
Liaukonyte stated that in mostly Republican counties, the brand actually encountered a temporary increase in sales from new customers, and the researchers discovered that the protests did not affect sales or new account registrations in the long term.
Liaukonyte expressed, “The impact on sales of other Goya items, such as adobo seasoning, which have fewer comparable alternatives, was relatively minor.” The effectiveness of the Goya boycott was highest when consumers could readily replace its products, such as beans.
Working against Bud Light could be one factor, as she mentioned, “If there is a product that is extremely simple to transition to and is viewed by the customer base as a remarkably similar alternative, then it could potentially enhance the effectiveness of the boycott.”
Doreen Shanahan, a marketing professor at Pepperdine University, expressed, “As the consumer’s enthusiasm diminishes, so will the boycott, and the media’s spotlight will eventually fade.”
In 2019, Shanahan, who assisted in defining a series of approaches for handling boycotts, spent 15 years working at The Coca-Cola Co. Prior to transitioning into academia.
A challenge for companies under fire: weathering the storm
Most importantly: “Endure the difficult times,” Shanahan and her coworkers penned.
She said, “When a company starts, it is sometimes difficult to anticipate the effect they will have on sales. The holding question to start definitely they then, anticipate might they than more is effect that when. Sometimes, it is difficult to see an effect on sales when they start to hold the question.”
In the U.S., Beer sales were slightly down overall in 2022. However, Bud Light, the best-selling beer brand in the U.S., Has experienced a surge in sales, while craft beers have seen a decline. This has led to a decrease in the market share of larger brewers like Anheuser-Busch.
In an interview last month, Heinerscheid, the first female to head Bud Light in the brand’s four-decade history, stated that the beer brand was “experiencing a decrease.”
“Heinerscheid stated on the “Make Yourself at Home” podcast that unless we attract young drinkers, there will be no future for Bud Light. Therefore, it is crucial to promote this brand and encourage people to choose it as their preferred beverage.”
Anheuser-Busch has expressed its dedication to creating a workplace and customer base that embraces all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or any other personal attributes or social affiliations. This commitment is highlighted in the company’s diversity, equity, and inclusion statement, which can be found on its website.
Shanahan stated, “It’s not the outcome we would have desired to observe from a perspective of managing a boycott.” Anheuser-Busch leadership seems to be concerned about the potential long-lasting impacts of the boycott, especially with two marketing executives currently on leave. (The company has not provided a response to a comment request.)
Shanahan expressed, “That is not disappearing.” We will continue to promote marketing and advertisements in order to reach a wider range of diverse individuals. She mentioned, “Other businesses will not hesitate to expand their own customer demographics.” Anheuser-Busch may face negative consequences as a result.
