Gandalf in Moria – ‘I have no memory of this place at all!’ – The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The fate of Middle-earth was delicately poised as the carrier of the One Ring ventured through a dark and treacherous realm, filled with trolls and orcs. It was crucial not to forget the secret doorway, which provided a different passage. It had been a very long time since Gandalf’s last journey to Moria, and it was not an easy task to uncover the way. There is an abundance of digging to be done, and it is a daunting challenge. The question of why Gandalf doesn’t remember Moria remains unanswered.

I would like to create a series of artworks depicting both Gandalf’s trips through Moria as well as the many battles that happened there. I will dig into this in much more depth in the future, but for now, the short answer to the question is that’s the way it is.

Many years ago, I worked on a very rough version of this scene sketch. Since then, I have always intended to work on a more detailed version of this scene sketch, with the aim of adding more intricacy and originality. As mentioned earlier, I now plan to revisit it and work on a more detailed version, focusing on enhancing the vision and adding much more detail.

Every exploration of Middle-earth brings a bounty of new art, as I delve into the perilous and interesting depths of Mines with excitement and inspiration, learning many valuable lessons along the way.

For this illustration, we embark on a journey in the dark in Chapter IV of Book Two, The Fellowship of the Ring – The Lord of the Rings.

“I have no memory of this place at all!”

Actually Gandalf was awake… He was deep in thought, trying to recall every memory of his former journey in the Mines, and considering anxiously the next course that he should take; a false turn now might be disastrous.

I silently observe, using my soft pencils, as I become a part of the scene, immersing myself fully in any scene that catches my eye.

I am in Moria, watching Gandalf as he ponders over his previous visit and strays deep within the realms of memory, trying to find the passage that the fellowship needs to pass through as quickly and safely as possible. I observe that he is avoiding any conflict with the orcs and remaining as safe as possible. The captivating storytelling and wealth of description provided in his tales are truly remarkable.

Collection the to add done sketch a getting resist I could how him observing there I’m whilst fashion, artistic true in and.

It was Gandalf who roused them all from sleep. He had sat and watched all alone for about six hours, and had let the others rest.

‘And in the watches I have made up my mind.’
