When I downloaded DF, I saw the cloud save icon and was excited, thinking it would finally be easy to continue my game from one device to another. Sadly, I realized that currently, all I can do is make my own bootleg version, so it doesn’t seem like anything else is featured in the cloud save.
Introduction
You can use any Provider you want, such as Onedrive, to point to your cloud provider’s location on your hard disk, as long as you have a local connection. However, there may be potential issues with bottleneck speed and shared network drives. In this guide, I will use Dropbox as my cloud provider, working fine even with these potential issues.
Note: Depending on your settings, this guide might look a bit different in pictures, so be aware that the language of my Windows is set to German. Finding Your Dwarf Fortress Game Files
First, you will need to locate the game files for your dwarf fortress. To accomplish this, simply right-click on dwarf fortress in your steam library within your game list and select manage>browse local files.

Moving the Savefiles
In my Dropbox, I have created a special subfolder called “GameSaves” for DwarfFortress, where I keep things organized. Whenever I need to move the save folder to a new location, it may be necessary for us to first move all the files to the new designated location.

Kindly keep in mind that the route might look quite distinct based on the location where you have set up Dropbox or any other software you are utilizing.
Afterward, we duplicated the save file and removed the previous save folder in the Dwarf fortress steam game directory.
Creating the Link
Now, using the cmd interface, just type this program into your search bar to find an alternative command. While the mklink command doesn’t exist in PowerShell, it seems that there is a more complicated alternative, so let’s stick to this.
When you create a folder inside your local cloud provider directory, such as OneDrive or Dropbox, the game file folder is actually located inside that folder. In order to create a symbolic link that tricks the game into believing that the save folder is inside the dwarf fortress folder, we will use the mklink command here.
To achieve this you have to use the command like this:.Output: In order to accomplish

If everything functioned as intended, you should now possess a save shortcut type of file in the directory of your dwarffortress game.

Still referred to as a directory rather than a shortcut file.
Afternotes
It is important to mention that while working, you may need to redo the same procedure to save, sync, and create links for files on different PCs.
It is best to never try to sync your PC with another device before completing a new session. Keep in mind that the folder will likely be saved in your cloud sync, so the last one to end up there will probably be what is saved. In case of a conflict resolution, there is no real conflict if the cloud provider has implemented both saves (one from each device). Also, be careful not to accidentally replace a long game with an earlier save, as it could brick the game. So, be cautious when playing on different devices at once.
Obviously you can apply this methode to pretty much any game you want trough if its practical everywhere is a different question.
If you try to access files that do not exist on your system, it might not work properly. Instead, you should make sure to save them in a folder offline (such as the cloud) or another note-taking service like Dropbox.
If you want to search for symbolic links and find the appropriate command for any operating system other than Windows, the fundamental concept should remain unchanged.
