How a murderer was brought down by a postmark, a cellphone call, a handful of receipts

In 2007, investigators in Norfolk, Virginia were struggling to find clues that would lead them to the suspect after a mother and daughter were fatally stabbed inside their home.

There were no signs of forced entry into the shared home of Vonda Goyena and Angelique Goyena, 35, nicknamed Angel, later claiming that someone from the Chicago police sent her a letter two weeks after the women she killed rebuffed his advances.

“Evans, the Norfolk prosecutor, revealed that this letter is highly unusual and serves as a vivid recollection of the killer. Essentially, the act of killing was not the main focus.”

David Wayne Hoshaw, her future husband, had a solid alibi, stating that he was at her residence with the keys, which was known by everyone. The detectives did not have any immediate leads, so the Michigan police sent another taunting letter to the detectives.

Other secrets and a clandestine affair, they discovered a dark past once detectives started taking a deeper dive into Hoshaw’s romantic life.

On Friday, February 17th, at 9:00 PM ET, “20/20” will delve into the court case that brought justice to Hoshaw and the three-year-long manhunt that ensued. This episode will be available for streaming on Hulu the following day.

Angelique Goyena met Hoshaw online in 2006, six months after he proposed to her. The authorities unintentionally helped in the case by conducting interviews with the suspect’s former fiancée and his family, which will be featured in a police interrogation room.

The Goyena family members and investigators stated that Hoshaw seemed safe, but they were still suspicious. Hoshaw, who was attending a weeklong Boy Scouts campout roughly 80 miles away, had an airtight alibi that appeared to be a previous relationship with his 12-year-old son. Evans, the detective who interviewed Hoshaw shortly after the Goyenas were murdered, mentioned this.

According to Yolanda, Angel Goyena’s sister, during the months before her passing, Hoshaw displayed a lack of physical and emotional closeness and displayed disinterest in their preparations for the wedding, as shared on “20/20”.

Angelique would often confide in me, expressing her deep concern about how he would visibly display disgust towards her, as if he had an unmistakable expression on his face that would greatly disturb her.

She used to be called Amanda, and at that time, the Hoshaw family later learned that she was another woman seeing News ABC.

They became engaged. Amanda decided to move to Michigan and left immediately. She never attended the funeral service of her sibling, Angelique Goyena, as Hoshaw informed “20/20”.

Detective Rick Malbon from Norfolk informed “20/20” that Amanda Hoshaw had developed a relationship with him using her name as a password on his computer.

During an exclusive interview with Ryan Smith, correspondent for “20/20,” Amanda informed ABC News that Hoshaw clarified that his former girlfriend had been killed. He was distressed, asserted that he had ended the relationship with her, and was insistent that he had no involvement in her demise.

“He stated that he was granted the go-ahead and he was ready to start his journey, so I believed him,” she conveyed.

However, Malbon stated that Hoshaw’s narratives and excuses didn’t make sense. According to Malbon, it was possible that he could have departed late that evening, carried out the killings, and come back by morning without anyone observing his absence, despite participating in a Boy Scouts camping excursion on the night of the homicides.

Evans exclaimed, “strange information emerged further, revealing more about him, causing David Hoshaw to resemble an onion in the case.”

Det. Malbon clarified, “Before and after the murder, we thoroughly investigated all of David Hoshaw’s actions, or a significant portion of his actions.”

Investigators would discover Hoshaw’s sinister and unsettling past of mistreatment and deceit by speaking with his ex-spouses.

Investigators followed the paper trail of David’s credit card receipts and cell phone records, placing him in the vicinity of the post offices on the exact dates when two taunting letters had been mailed.

In Hoshaw, detectives apprehended 2009 after a grand jury charged him with murder. Amanda, their second child who was expecting, was present in the residence when law enforcement officers restrained him and transported him to the detention facility.

She said, “I needed to fight my way out of the pit, like I was thrown into an alligator, I mean it was just like anything, I didn’t even get time to process it.”

Amanda would play a crucial role in solving the case.

When Malbon interrogated Hoshaw, David once more denied his participation in the killing of the mother and daughter and his subsequent action of mailing the letters to the police.

He was permitted to communicate with Amanda in private in the interrogation chamber; however, investigators were eavesdropping from behind a unidirectional glass.

“I went insane,” uttering those words, Hoshaw admitted to Amanda that he murdered the Goyenas due to his desire to end his relationship with Angelique Goyena.

When Amanda inquired about the correspondence dispatched to the authorities, Hoshaw confessed to sending them.

“That was foolish. I was attempting to get him off my back,” he stated during the recorded dialogue.

Malbon stated, “Phil, the district attorney, couldn’t come out to wait for the call. He said it would help strengthen my case enough for Amanda.”

Hoshaw immediately pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, based on the strong circumstantial case built by investigators.

Amanda admitted that she still harbors feelings of hatred towards her former fiancé, not only for the pain he caused to herself and their children, but also to the Goyena family.

She said, “I have a terrible feeling… He reminds me of her basically because he got rid of me, then he got me into this circle. He lied to Angelique about being in a relationship with her.”

Yolanda Goyena stated that the family is still mourning the loss, but they will forever value the essence of Vonda and Angelique.

She expressed, “Angelique was a blessing to our family, simply wow, Angel. My mother’s remarkable wit, I simply reminisce about them with great affection. It has taken me years to reach this point.”
