The upcoming show on the streaming service Hulu, set to be released tomorrow, is Saint X. Adapted from Alexis Schaitkin’s novel of the same title published in 2020, this fresh series is ideal for those who enjoy light summer reads, crime stories, and indulging in continuous viewing sessions. It will undoubtedly become the main topic of conversation in your group chat.
The story of X Saint follows Claire, a young woman who is still searching for answers regarding the disappearance of her 7-year-old sister Alison while on vacation in New York City. The story also delves into the mysterious death and disappearance of Thomas, an 18-year-old college student and friend of Alison.
In the series, Emily befriends the main suspect in her sister’s case, Claire, under the pseudonym of Alison’s sister, and the story jumps between the timelines of their current lives and the vacation that led to Alison’s death.
“Am I more knowledgeable than the entire world?,” Claire declares in the trailer. “My sister’s murder made headlines for years,” particularly since the narrative has accompanied her throughout her entire existence, Claire yearns for any resolution concerning her sister’s questionable demise.

The story may be based on the real disappearance of Natalee Holloway.
Joran van der Sloot, one of the main suspects, along with three other young individuals, was last observed departing a tavern at approximately 1:30 a.M. In the downtown vicinity on May 30, 2005, accompanied by Natalee Holloway, a senior student from Mountain Brook High School in Alabama. Natalee Holloway mysteriously disappeared while on a school excursion to Aruba in May 2005.
The FBI never saw Natalee again and they never made a departure for Aruba, but the class was set to leave the next morning.
While on the fictional island of X Saint, Van der Sloot made many statements regarding Natalee’s death but never officially revealed or admitted to killing her. The case of Natalee Holloway was also never solved officially. Aruba, where it is located, is set in the Caribbean Sea.
He later claimed that she lied about her biography, but he said on camera in 2008 that after she passed out on the beach at night, he threw her body into the ocean.
In 2012, Van der Sloot was ultimately apprehended and accused of the killing of another young lady, Stephany Flores Ramirez. Even though her body was never discovered, Natalee Holloway was formally pronounced deceased by an Alabama judge, according to Biography.
The case of Natalee Holloway’s disappearance was a widely covered international news story for many months, similar to the fictional case of Alison Thomas in the series trailer and novel, but it doesn’t seem to be based on the character Clive’s van der Sloot.
Saint X is the aftermath of a murder mystery.
Alison’s little sister Claire (played by Carey Debnam-Alycia) is unable to move on without knowing for sure what happened to her sister, who died at the time of her death. In an attempt to move on with their lives, the main characters of the story, Claire and Thomas, go to the cold case where Claire’s sister’s death occurred, picking up the story 20 years after Alison’s death. Unlike a typical murder mystery, X Saint presents a unique twist.
Another character, Bonzie Richardson (played by Josh Clive), is also unable to separate his life from Alison’s death. Clive was a worker at the resort during Alison’s final days alive, where he befriended her and became a suspect in her murder.
While riding in his cab, Claire coincidentally encounters her in New York City, where he moves for employment, compelled to depart from Saint X Island. Clive couldn’t distance himself from the stigma that he was involved in Alison’s demise, despite being exonerated.
Reportedly, the show will also explore themes of social status, ethnicity, and advantage, as Clive was from a lower socioeconomic background residing in Saint X, while the Thomas family is extremely affluent.
Is Alison’s murder ever solved?
Claire is unable to definitively figure out what happened to Alison, but she discovers in her book that Clive, also known as her sister’s involvement in Alison’s death, actually did not happen.
Death is truly a grievous matter, and the ending of This book would also be similar to the unfortunate case of Natalee Holloway. However, Claire is able to find peace and closure with her sister’s death and her grief. It would not be surprising if the series on Hulu takes a different approach, making the ending rather unsatisfying, to be honest.
