Las Torres Gemelas

The One World Trade Center, the tallest skyscraper in New York once again, stands at the World Trade Center, alongside other buildings after two decades of reconstruction. The tallest skyscrapers in NY were the Twin Towers, until the attack on September 11, 2001.

As a tribute to the Twin Towers that disappeared, I prepared a brief review of New York City and its construction in the western part of the city.

Until the Willis Tower in Chicago surpassed them in height, the Twin Towers, which were the tallest skyscrapers in New York until 2001 and only the tallest in the world for one year – with 36 meters more than the former Empire State Building – were located in the World Trade Center complex.

Importancia de Las Torres Gemelas

In the dedicated page of the 9/11 Memorial and the 9/11 Museum, you will find information about the 9/11 events. I will devote this space to the brilliance that constructed the Twin Towers and not to the tragedy that caused their collapse.

Historia de las Twin Towers

Over time, the symbol of American commercial power would transform into the financial complex designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, which was opened in the heart of Lower Manhattan in 1973.

The Twin Towers were known as their skyscrapers, and here we will occupy several buildings that were part of the World Trade Center – the actual WTC.

Symbolically, the Twin Towers arrived at the same level as the Empire State and the Statue of Liberty, being depicted in the comic and movie series set in New York City, where the post about them is read in the Twin Towers cinema.

After the September 11th attack, several producers decided to digitally extract the films from the Towers in respect to the victims.

¿Cuántos pisos tenían las Torres Gemelas?

The South Tower was 415 meters tall, and the North Tower reached a height of 417 meters (over 526 when including the telecommunications antenna). Despite a slight difference in height, both towers had 110 floors.

Every day, the 150 thousand people, including visitors and office workers, circulated through the towers, which needed to be efficiently mobilized. This project would not have been feasible without this combination of “local and express” elevators (some stopping at every floor and others at certain “stations”). Each tower had the impressive number of 99 elevators.

For those wanting to dine at the restaurant Windows of the World in the north tower, or enjoy the view from the Top of the World Trade Center viewpoint in the south tower, the buildings were equipped with elevators specifically for tourists, allowing them to reach the 107th floor in a mere 1 minute.

Caída de las Torres Gemelas

In the 2008 documentary “102 Minutes that Changed America” by The History Channel, you will learn about the details of the tragic day of the World Trade Center attack. They present a chronology of the attack edited with footage recorded by witnesses and victims of 9/11 in it.

If you prefer a movie based on real events, there is World Trade Center (2006) directed by Oliver Stone.

Museo de Las Torres Gemelas

If you desire to gain further insight into the history of the devastating September 11th event, you should make a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. This museum serves as the official institution dedicated to documenting the events of the attack and honoring the memory of all the individuals who lost their lives on that fateful day.

The new Transportation Hub WTC, designed by the famous architect Calatrava, was inaugurated in 2015 in the place of the Twin Towers, where the World Trade Center One and the 9/11 Memorial Museum, with its towering height, are located.
