A woman from Pennsylvania, who went missing more than 30 years ago and was declared legally dead, has been found alive and living in Puerto Rico receiving in-home nursing care.
In 1992, Patricia Kopta, who was 83 years old, was last seen in Pittsburgh with her family. According to the Emergency Response Center of Pennsylvania, a missing person flyer was posted for her, as she was known as a well-known preacher on Sparrow Street. She had a slight build at the time.
No doubt, he didn’t expect his wife’s disappearance to remain a mystery for 31 years. Noting that it wasn’t uncommon for his wife to leave for short periods of time, Bob Kopta reported her missing in 1992.
At a press briefing alongside the Ross Township Police last week, Bob Kopta remarked, “No one had any information about her whereabouts, and she disappeared without a trace.”
Contacted by an official from the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and a social worker from Puerto Rico who provided care for her, law enforcement authorities in the United States ultimately discovered the narrative of Patricia’s ordeal.
Ross Township Deputy Chief Brian Kohlhepp stated, “While in the Puerto Rican streets, she was discovered in a state of distress when she entered their custody in 1999, as per their account provided to us.”
As her age and dementia advanced, she gradually started to disclose infrequent tidbits about her past. Patricia, who resided in the care home for years, declined to reveal any specifics regarding her personal life or origins.
Kohlhepp stated that a DNA test has verified the identity of the woman, who is now 83 years old. The social worker at the facility had sufficient information about the woman to notify the authorities in her home country by the previous year.
According to her family, Patricia continued to preach until she vanished. She was then released from a facility after being diagnosed by doctors with “delusions of grandeur” and showing indications of schizophrenia.
Kohlhepp stated on Friday, “She expressed worry that she would be confined in an institution. This is what we suspect prompted her to choose to escape the country.”
Before Patricia was married, she would vacation often in Puerto Rico with her friends, according to her surviving sister, 78-year-old Gloria Smith.
“Smith told the AP that she simply adored the sea, the shore, and the pleasant sunshine.”
In their attempt to seek advice from a psychic, law enforcement authorities went to great lengths. Unfortunately, Bob’s efforts to locate her by placing advertisements in Puerto Rican newspapers proved to be unsuccessful when she vanished.
Years passed after Patricia’s disappearance, approximately seven years later, Bob, who had been married to her for two decades, acquired a declaration of her death without any indication of her whereabouts.
Bob Kopta, a former truck driver, expressed, “I experienced a great deal.” “Is it Patricia? Is it Patricia?” (I pondered) each instance they discovered a corpse in a certain location.
Kohlhepp stated, “She hinted that she had arrived on a cruise ship from Europe and was taken home as an adult when she first arrived in Puerto Rico.” Meanwhile, Patricia was apparently wandering in the northern towns of Naranjito, Corozal, and Alta Toa, located just southwest of San Juan, the capital of the island.
After a social worker in Pennsylvania contacted the police, it took nearly a year for Patricia to be definitively identified as the woman through DNA samples.
“It’s a sad thing, but it’s a relief off my mind,” her husband said. “When your wife goes missing, you’re a suspect.”.
Naturally, she is being looked after, and he is relieved to be aware of that, even though he is currently attempting to put the past behind him and has expressed that he has no intentions of visiting, Bob, who has not entered into a new marriage.
Patricia’s twin sister, who has dementia, is still alive, but Patricia is unable to speak to her elder sibling on the phone because she cannot hold a conversation. However, she wants to go to the island to see her older sister, says Smith.
Smith expressed, “I contemplated the possibility that she might have passed away. Regardless of her familiarity with me, I still crave the opportunity to encounter her, embrace her tightly, and express my affection towards her.”
