You can download it yourself if an image is being displayed. (On the site, only some images are displayed as thumbnails because you have access to larger size images but there are considerations for rights outside the Library of Congress).

Alternatively, you can buy duplicates of different kinds through the Duplication Services of the Library of Congress.

  • If an image is a digital reproduction that was directly made from the original, for publication purposes, then it is sufficient for resolution. The reproduction number, which starts with LC-DIG…, Includes the field Number Reproduction above. The qualities of the digital image depend on whether it was made from an intermediate transparency or negative copy or directly from the original. If it is a digital image, it is used for displaying purposes.
  • If there is information listed in the Reproduction Number field above: You can use the reproduction number to purchase a copy from Duplication Services. It will be made from the source listed in the parentheses after the number.

If you are requesting to purchase a copy of the original record catalog, which includes the above listed Call Numbers, please specify if you desire a tinted or colored copy showing the original colors (assuming any exist). Please note that the available sources only provide “black-and-white” copies.

  • To fulfill your request, please provide the catalog record (“About This Item”) and reference the Call Number provided above. If there is no information available in the Reproduction Number field above, you can usually obtain a high-quality copy through Duplication Services.

    Access to Originals

To determine whether you need to fill out a slip and call the Reading Room for Photographs and Prints in order to view the original item(s) in some cases, a digital image of the microfilm or print copy is often available as a substitute.

  • Has the item been digitized? (A small thumbnail image will be visible on the left.)

  • Yes, the item is digitized. Please use the digital image in preference to requesting the original. All images can be viewed at a large size when you are in any reading room at the Library of Congress. In some cases, only thumbnail (small) images are available when you are outside the Library of Congress because the item is rights restricted or has not been evaluated for rights restrictions. As a preservation measure, we generally do not serve an original item when a digital image is available. If you have a compelling reason to see the original, consult with a reference librarian. (Sometimes, the original is simply too fragile to serve. For example, glass and film photographic negatives are particularly subject to damage. They are also easier to see online where they are presented as positive images.)
  • No, the object is not digitized. Please proceed to number 2.
  • Do the Access Advisory or Call Number fields above indicate the presence of a non-digital substitute, such as microfilm or duplicate prints?

  • Yes, another surrogate exists. Reference staff can direct you to this surrogate.
  • No, another substitute does not exist. Please proceed to number 3.
  • If you are unsure how to fill out a slip to call and request materials from the Reference staff in the Reading Room, they can advise you on how to do so. In many cases, the originals can be served to you in just a few minutes. However, if you are unable to see another reference surrogate or image thumbnail, you may need to make appointments for the same day or a later date.
  • Please utilize our Ask A Librarian service or dial the reading room during the hours of 8:30 and 5:00 at 202-707-6394, and select 3 to reach Reference personnel in the Prints and Photographs Reading Room.
