The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

Finally, Maisel Midge gets her big break performing live on The Gordon Ford Show, a stand-up act. This happens in the finale of Season 5, Episode 9 of the series Mrs. Marvelous.

It was a grand finale with a lot of thrill, heart-wrenching moments, and, as usual, laughter.

Lenny Bruce, naturally, and Imogene (we’ve longed for your presence!), Alfie (in a charming little split-second appearance), Mrs. Moskowitz (as dedicated as ever), and a few individuals we haven’t encountered frequently (or at all) this season, witnessed the reappearance of numerous characters in this episode.

The episode begins with Lenny’s notorious performance at Basin Street West. He would pass away the next year.

I was born well-known.

  • It’s a strange “reality” to contemplate, but if Midge had been able to enter, she would likely have been able to save him in a way that Susie alone couldn’t, and that’s the truly heartbreaking aspect.

Midge probably knows this and will retain that knowledge throughout her entire life.

In The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4 Episode 8, do you recall the scene at Wo Hop where they have a meal? Following their intimate encounter, he informs her that they will dine on Chinese cuisine.

When Lenny accompanies her during her break, she discreetly hides it in her bra before going on stage with Gordon Ford, the fortune teller she performs with.

It is during this moment that Midge expresses her love for Lenny.

Oh, I adore a man who pilfers my food.

  • In a jest, she utters the words, as he fails to acknowledge them and she lowers her defenses, creating a truly exquisite moment – Midge becomes aware of her slip, observe Brosnahan’s expression, but perhaps he does or does not take notice of it, thus it swiftly passes by.

But then, in what other way would one comedian express her affection towards another?

When it comes to the important men in Midge’s life, they are a diverse group.

Midge and he are finally square and proud to see him so satisfied, which is so satisfying. Instead of feeling emasculated by her, Joel continues to be a guy-up stand in her comedic act (not in a comedic sense).

Their relationship is complex, but they will always have a strong love for one another. Who is Mei?

There are definitely similarities between Rivers Joan and Carson Johnny. What scares him is taking her job. He is scared of what? She gets a laugh the moment he cuts to the commercial in the talent of Midge, which threatens him. On the other hand, Ford Gordon is threatened by the hand of the other.

Perhaps he was just sore from having to kowtow to his wife’s demand of being a “rule-breaking” wife, which made their relationship all the more intriguing and Hedy’s spinoff watch-worthy.

Season five was incredibly satisfying, with a payoff that was heart-racing and nail-biting. Throughout the latter part of the episode, Gordon’s petty about-face served as an incredible source of dramatic tension and an unexpected obstacle.

Mike Carr: I can feel your eyes burning a hole through my head.Susie Myerson: You’re lucky I’m not staring at your balls.

  • Throughout the course of events, she gained his admiration and a chance to be interviewed on the sofa by cleverly shifting the situation onto Gordon, with the assistance of Susie and Mike. The approach she would take remained uncertain, but she must find a way to surmount this challenge. Midge’s triumph is imperative, that much we are certain of.

Reid Scott even had the privilege of uttering the title of the show.

Mrs. Maisel, the extraordinary, the enchanting, the splendid, the gift I might present to Ford Gordon, did not make her first appearance on the last occasion, but certainly impressed both gentlemen and ladies.

  • Abe, there’s Abe, who had a poignant epiphany in Mrs. Maisel’s marvelous world, about how proud he was of her.

However, on the other hand, it took a bit more convincing for Miriam to think that she didn’t think of her in a hilarious and fun sequence of telephone calls when she received no less than four calls.

Midge rarely receives such sincere affirmation from her parents. She needed that additional motivation from her belief in her daughter’s authenticity on her “big night”.

This entire episode was a demonstration of classic comedy styles.

Occasionally, it requires slipping in the shower for everything to become exceedingly evident.

  • Shirley and Moishe accidentally stumbled upon a perfect decision for their retirement in Florida, thanks to the charming characters they encountered. Abe and Rose, who were questioning the cabbie, led them on a hilarious adventure of running through the city in taxis.

There were foolish sound effects in the writer’s chamber. The close-up on Mike as Susie yelled at him was invaluable.

This entire episode took place within the comedic zany, exaggerated reality.

And, naturally, there was Midge’s group.

Up until now, you started your career by getting on a stage that no one advised you to be on, expressing a bunch of words that no one desired to hear. However,

  • Midge’s remarkable professional journey propelled the entire cast, which we were thrilled to witness, so her stand-up performances were limited this season (aside from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 5 on the boat and a brief stint at the Wolford for Gordon to observe).

She had a moment of clarity. She was confident and composed. It was tense. We finally found out what Midge was doing after four whole minutes.

In the episode that we will see later, she wants to get everything she desires. Midge’s big moment in life manifested itself as she spoke about the fame and success of Mary Martin. The camera shot and lighting at the Gaslight parallel made us and Midge, the viewers, feel connected.

Almost everyone who was important to her could claim that they were present (except for Lenny, obviously, but he was there in spirit. And Moishe, due to pain medication. And Ethan and Esther, because they are children – by the way, who is supervising those kids while all of this is going on?!).

Alright then. Weissman Rose. When it comes to shopping for clothes, she will wait until her daughter is old enough to handle the potential trauma. My son was born a week ago and he has already been circumcised, as we are a Jewish household. We are Maisel Midge Miriam.

  • Permalink: Well, that’s fair.
  • The entire sequence was filled with joy as the female staff members snuck in to watch one of their own, Gordon, and cheered for her while she had a moment on the couch. The writers were bowing to her, bringing her immense joy.

She made history by shattering the glass ceiling; it was a manifesto. However, she didn’t just do comedy. She felt that she had earned it, and it was a long time coming.

By the way, Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer absolutely nailed the role of Carol Burnett. I was completely taken aback. Watch the original performance for yourself here.

On The Gordon Ford Show, their bond evolved from this joint appearance in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5 Episode 2 on the “60 Minutes” segment, we caught a glimpse of Midge’s camaraderie with Burnett. It’s enjoyable to conjecture.

I’m not sure what could be a better transition to Midge. If this isn’t an ideal transition to Midge, then I’m at a loss. Burnett performed “Shy” from Once Upon A Mattress, a tune where a woman asserts to be shy but masks it with a boisterous and humorous demeanor.

The continuous emphasis throughout the series has been Dearie’s narration during Midge and Lenny’s meal, which was appropriate. This particular episode truly excelled, but the soundtrack for the entire season has been exceptional.

Barbra Streisand’s rendition of “I Stayed Too Long At The Fair” brought a haunting sadness to Midge’s glamorous golden era.

The pilot episode of “Talk Girls” concluded with the original credits playing over Dave Edmunds’ rendition of “Cherry on Top,” capping it off with Sara and Tegan’s cover.

Blondie! And now they’re blond! Dull or unintelligent or unappealing or overweight to even have the decency to possess they don’t. There they are, just standing there, unwelcome, walking right back into your life, you know? And having to deal with the unexpected, and the crap that piles up, as you go on with your life.

  • Permalink: You go on with your life. File shit away, you don’t expect to ever have to deal with it…
  • I didn’t think that we would get the whole backstory of Hedy, but Susie laid it all out for us, giving us some real insight into Susie’s feelings and what she loved and showed willingness to do.

The importance of that action and acknowledge Hedy’s decision to approach Susie for understanding Midge’s worth was significant.

In the 6th Episode of Season Maisel, Mrs. Marvelous, the scene hinted at a reconciliation that we didn’t get to see as continents separated and came together under the water, clearly visible while watching Jeopardy!

How amazing was it that Susie’s fondness for pigeons evolved into a diverse assortment of exotic birds, including peacocks? Their separation lasted for approximately five years, coinciding with Joel’s time in prison.

Miriam “Midge” Maisel: If you could be any animal, what would you choose? Susie Myerson: A skunk, because they have a cute face and great fur! Miriam “Midge” Maisel: Why a skunk? Susie Myerson: Because they have a unique weapon – their ass!

  • Permalink: Great fur, cute face, and your ass is a weapon!
  • The way Susie and Midge laughed and chatted together at the end of the series was a lovely, low-key affair. The chemistry between Brosnahan and Borstein is pure gold comedy. We’ve seen their female friendship on television and it is one of the most entertaining and heartfelt ones.

Susie Myerson: Are you sincere? Miriam “Midge” Maisel: I’m Antigone without the chuckles.

Many of us now know what Mrs. Maisel has proven – women can be funny, and they can do it in heels and backwards!

Midge’s tenacity is an inspiration to everyone, but she is not the only one. Women like Elayne Boosler, Joan Rivers, and Phyllis Diller have also paved the way and helped make stand-up careers more viable for women. This show is a tribute to all of them.
