The match was a physical one, with six yellow cards shown for each team. Portugal out-shot the USA 17-6, but the USA did not allow a shot on goal and turned their struggles into scoring opportunities.

In the first half, USA had a handful of good chances as they looked to open up the wings and find Portugal’s most dangerous attacker, Jéssica Silva, who pulled the strings with flair and poise. The match at Eden Park, New Zealand’s National Stadium, was tightly contested by both sides, with a record crowd of nearly 43,000 electric fans marking the occasion.

Williams’ second effort from the rebound soared above the crossbar and then Pereira positioned herself to deny the opportunity. However, Pereira’s positioning allowed the ball to bounce off her and into Williams’ path. Williams then proceeded to deliver a low cross towards the center of the box while dribbling along the endline and cutting inward. This occurred after forward Alex Morgan received a pass and skillfully evaded her defender. The first notable opportunity arose in the 27th minute, when forward Alex Morgan received a pass and displayed great strength against her opponent. It is worth mentioning that this opponent was making her World Cup debut that night. The USA’s two most threatening chances in the first half originated from forward Lynn Williams.

After a stoppage in play, Williams came close again.

Lavelle almost scored in the 60th minute with a powerful header, after a free kick from Williams. She knocked the ball out for a corner when attempting a shot from a tight angle on the right side of the goal box. In the 54th minute, Morgan had a good chance after receiving a pass from Horan, evading the goalkeeper with a touch and running onto the ball. The USA maintained their starting lineup, dominating the initial part of the second half and keeping Portugal pinned in their own half.

Naeher Alyssa, the goalkeeper, was also called into action in the air with a few claims. Julie Ertz and Girma anchored the middle while Crystal Dunn and Emily Fox quickly recovered on the flanks to shut down Portugal’s threats. In the end, the U.S. Backline did well to keep the other end secure. Although she didn’t connect with numerous services from her teammates, Megan Rapinoe provided an experienced and calm presence for Sophia Smith on the left wing, allowing her to create some danger. Megan Rapinoe, the forward, provided an experienced and calm presence for Sophia Smith on the left wing, allowing her to create some danger after coming into the match in the 62nd minute.

In the first minute of the night, Portugal’s best chance came when Ana Capeta, a forward on the left end, took a powerful shot that bounced off the post and went right outside the reach of goalkeeper Naeher. She then touched the ball to her right, following a quick counter from Morgan after a breakaway against Naeher.

Despite their six shots on frame tonight, the Americans could not find the back of the net. However, in the final moments of the match, Trinity Rodman, Morgan, and Rapinoe, the trio at the front door, looked closely together like a couple strung close to each other, representing the U.S.
